Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hey all
Ok time for a new motor.
I rang a wreckers and they qouted $660 for a good one, with a 3 month waranty. And suzisport in springwood can put it in for $440. Any suggestions?
I would like to put the motor in myself, but i have never done it before. Is it hard? Do these prices look ok? Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks.

Not hard. we took our time and a couple of hours it was done. Lining up the clutch is the hardest thing i think.

it's pretty easy actually, you just need to set yourself up some sort of crane and maybe get a mate to lend you a hand, can be a little tricky lining things up by yourself, but otherwise it is pretty straight forward. It pays to get a tear down and rebuild kind of manual which goes through the steps of how to take out and put the engine back in, my hanes manual has helped alot.

I've done it 3 times over the last 10 years or so and it is fairly straight forward. (Swift x 2 and Corolla)

I find it easier to take the gearbox out too and line up the clutch on the floor. It's a bit of extra work but not so fiddly. If you have good crane its not so much of an issue.

Get a good manual and give it a go.

thanks heaps guys appreciate it. Flyin wall that would be exelent mate, your a legend. Only problem is brissy is a fair drive from toowomba. Guess would be 1.45hrs. I got a mate that can help so should be schweet. Should i get a clutch alignment tool? The clutch in there is new so i dont need another one. Anyone know of any motors for sale? just checking. thanks again.

I have always got by with a 'drift' the right size. eg socket extension bar

a crane for the motor is probably best, but the ol' block and tackle hanging from your house, or the gum tree out front seems to work too.

a few posts back is a thread about a clitch alignement tool. dont bother with anything under $70, and anything above it isn't really worth it unless your a mechanic.

there a few ways to align the clutch. an old output shaft, a broom stick milled down, line of sight, or touch. its easier to get the clutch in while the motor is out, and then bolt the gearbox up, and drop it all in from the engine bay.

its all a learning experience, and a $440 labour bill can be better used for a locker, tyres, lights, stereo, or stuffed toys zip tied to the front grill.
