What can i get?

Hi guys, might be moving over to Oz, and with it being hard to bring my defender 90 over i was wondering what i can get with $20,000? Thats about what i'll have if i sell mine here in England and exchange currency. Looking at something for challenges like the outback, front & rear winch, lockers, simex etc etc. Anything like this come up for sale often? Or is it a case of having to build something from scratch? V8 or diesel?
First of all, 90's have only been sold from about 2000-2005 (and sales have now stopped). New they were about $45K AUD, so finding even a stock one for 20K is probably impossible.
However a mate bought a personal import that was fitted with a 3.9L ISUZU diesel and LT85 (option in OZ), and front and rear maxi drive lockers. You reading this Sam? I have seen stock personal import 90's go for about $10k, don't know what Sam paid for his.
The most comon vehicle for comps is the rangie, these often go very sheap and you could probably pick up an older one in good condition with lockers and lots of other good stuff for $7k or less.
Stock 200Tdi 110 trayback (in good condition) sells for about $10 (these would be a good base for a comp vehicle if you don't want rear seats). The 200Tdi Defender first arrived in 1992, only in trayback ute for first, we didn't get the wagons until later. A wagon would probably be about $15k, but you may find a bargain.
Early discos can also be picked up cheaply.
IMO for most of the comps in OZ a 90 would probably be a bit short. 100" would be better. There are a few 100" hybrids floating around if you can find one, and most of these have lockers. But the price really depends on how well built they are.
Very few comp trucks here have a rear winch - usually the conditiond aren't slippery enough to need it. A few trucks have a centre mounted winch so they can winch backwards or forwards if needed.

Ben was refering to rover choices.
I don't want to talk you out of a rover, but I would say Nissans are probably more popular for competitions.

Thanks John - should have said the most popular "rover" vehilcle for comps. I think that these days that since winch challenge and OBC events are increased to a 36" tyre limit, if you are competing in a rover you would need at the very least to run a salisbury rear, or better still the toyota centre conversion all round or nissan axles.

Wasnt ozzie selling his rangie ute? also wayne smith from amv had his tried and tested blue rangie up for sale ( cant remember how much, but this thing has won a heck of alot of comps ) If you want a setup rig these would be perfect.
OR, bring over your 90, we need more in oz.

Thanks for the replies guys. I would like to bring my 90 but i don't think i'll be able to get it clean enough to be allowed in. Im open to all sorts of suggestions, not just rovers really. Sorry
The stronger the better, would like something with power as well and preferably diesel. Not too familiar with toyota's or nissans. What would be people's suggestions? And any ideas how much something like Smithy's range rover would be?

I cant see why you couldnt bring the 90 in, AQIS will just steam clean it here untill its ok to be released - i work for a freight forwarder and deal with AQIS almost everyday.

Loanrangie, is the AQIS Australian quarantine. I would have thought steam cleaning it and putting it in a decontamination booth or whatever would be quite expensive wouldn't it? Attached is an old picture of my 90.

Try giving davew from this board a pm he bought his 100" hybrid over for the outback challenge and should be able to tell you whats involved in getting your 90 into oz..

AQIS is Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service, steam cleaning is not that expensive $214.50 for a 20ft and $269.50 for a 40ft so a car wont be much different. Will it be containerised or as break bulk (roll on roll off)?

Steam cleaning is the least of the hassles when importing..
Its the paperwork that leds to insanity.
But I'd say, if its something different. There aren't that many modified 90s running around.
