I was driving home from work this morning when i heard a pssst noise, the car produced a puff of black smoke, and my turbo hasn't produced any boost since. I have checked all hoses and piping and checked that the compressor still spins. Wastegate is still working fine.
What on earth could this be.

how did you check wastegate? when the motor is running is the compressor wheel speeding up with revs? sounds like a hose blew off but if they are all ok then ???????? maybe wastegate got stuck open

pulled off the actuator and moved the lever for the gate by hand and it seems to close properly.
pushed the actuator in and out by hand and it feels ok. ( cant feel anything catching)
I thought that it would be just a hose as well, but not sure anymore.
When i got it home the hose from the throttle body to the diaphram govnor appeared kinked. So i replaced it with some better hose and rerouted it so it is in no fear of kinking again. but the turbo still wont work.
Help please.

Apply vaccum to the actuator diapham and see if it
a/ holds vaccum
b/ moves

when you say it has no boost, when you hit the speed that the boost normally kicks in at do you loose power? Do you have a boost gauge that shows vacuum and what does it read?
I had a problem not too long ago when I got to the revs where I would get boost I would loose all power and blow lots of smoke. Turned out that a rubber elbow hose was sucking closed when I was coming up to boost.
I wet to alot of trouble to find it but all you really need to do is rev te engine with the bonnent up and see if any rubber hoses are sucking in.
Hope this helps you.

I read that u have 'checked the hoses' so all I will do is realate my experince with my turbo.
Firstly I also have a intercooler. One day I too heard this almight ''psssst'' and I lost all power. I to checked the hoses and couldnt see anything initialy. Then I noticed a hose from the intercooler had come off. Re-connected with hose clamp. All fixed back to full power etc.
Might help you

i run a boost guage in mine...... it dropped 4 psi one time...... one of the hoses had come loose on the bottom of the I/C....

Check for splits in the hoses too.
You'll also need to apply pressure to see the waste gate move, not vacuum as somebody said above.

yes i have a boost gauge, but even though it can show vac it never will cos it is a diesel. As i said i have checked all the hoses for splits, ran the car with the hose off the inlet of the turbo to make sure it spins, and sure enough it does.

even if your wastegate is jammed full open it should still make boost a few psi.. ran mine for a month with no wastegate cause it broke, could still make 5 psi some days...
u sure your boost gauge line hasnt died? or your boost gauge?? if it still blowin air(lots of air when u rev the motor) when u disconect the pipe to the inlet manifold then it should be makin boost of some sort..

even though you have checked hoses for splits, it be checking to see how the hoses feel, asit might have split on the inside, seperating into 2 halves, and the internal hose might be sucking in on its self,
another thing,
sounds odd, but you checked to see if the impellor spins, as i read above, does it vary with the throttle?maybe the exhaust sidehas broken the the blades (not sure on correct name) and not spinning up properly,

yes it spinns up when the motor is revved. when the pipes are removed from the turbo how much air should blow out of the compressor when it is just revved a bit.
I fear the turbo will have to come off to check the turbine and have a really good look at it.
