Leaf, lift and length..

Post by high n mighty »

I don't consider this a stupid question, I feel it makes some sense.

I want to lift my lux up again after lowering it for rego. I don't want to run extended shackles simply for lift anymore because I found that they were flogging springs out.

I want to end up with 3 or 4" lift front springs and the ifs rears to match.

Now I was thinking..... What if I ordered a custom set of springs a lil longer? If I had a set simply re-set to that height I would have terrible shackle angles yada yada yada. So why not have some leaves made up which keep almost std axle placement and hopefully std(or only slightly extended) shackles?

If I were to get these details to all match up I think it would still flex a reasonable amount, have a comfy ride and should be legal(or un-noticable)

Does this all make sense? If so how much should I be lengthening the main leaves etc. Triganometary and I didn't get along well(nor did english and I).

Cheers

I've been doing some drawing and math myself for a set of raised leaf packs. It's no problem to make them longer, but the stock shackle length can't cope with the stretched lenght from the longer main leaf (in my case), so without extending the shackles, taller bumps stops are required to prevent damage to your leaves maxing out the suspension. The more the leaves are arced, the more shackle length is required to make use of the longer leaves.

So a combo of flexible less highly arced leaves and a shackle lift are the way I'll go. What the best combination is, depends on spring length (unloaded vs loaded), and the purpose of the springs (flexqueen or just a little taller)

Just my 2 cts.

If you have some measurements for me, I'll see if i can make a sketch of the stock springs and the 3/4"lift springs

Cheers

I figure because the shackles were sitting upright there was no stretch on the packs or possibly the shackles were exerting pressure inwards.

I have W'd two sets in two years and hardly driven it in that time.

Do you have a trac bar? What exactly do you mean by they were flogging your springs out, what happened to them?

if u look at the springs in the front of a lux runnin extended shackles but no dropped front hangers to compensate they run a funny sorta line, its like they sorta go flat from the hanger to the diff then the shackle pushes down so much on the back of the spring, this makes em go W shaped so to speak and the lift sags out of them..

id say my angle of spring (front is alot higher then rear) is alot worse then a hilux with just extended shackles
and mine arnt getting flat spots near the perch

my old red zuk got flat spots in the front springs i thought it was from over compressing them (standard length shackles)

I had a set of leaves that were about 2 inches longer eye to eye than standard. I had them reset with a lot of lift to get the shackle angle back to near standard. I used standard shackles. It worked pretty good for a couple of years. But on a recent trip up to the gulf, the leaves lost thier temper, flattening out from, I assume, the load and the corregations. I ended up with the shackles horizontal. No more suspension, except for what the tyres and the poly bushes gave me, which wasnt much. The shackles ended up cutting through the bushes. I have since reworked another set of leaves, with a couple of these first leaves added to give a bit more lift. Seems to be working again, but the ride is a tad bouncy.

That was on the third set of springs cause I thought it was what was holding them back ;)

I now have some of the original springs in that are flogged out the same way.
