Lose my swaybar?

I'm thinking of pulling my swaybar out of the rear of the GQ and just driving sans swaybar rather than fitting sway bar disconnects.

I love the new 3" megalift but I am thinking it would flex up a lot better without the swaybar.

You guys think it would drive ok without the swaybar? Obviously I can't going hooking it into fast corners........but its a TD42, no turbo, so not much hooking going on anyway!

Rip em out. heaps better for off road, you will notice more body roll on the road but you don't buy a 4b for it's road handling abilities.

Although taking your swaybars off is probably illegal

Morkz, what lift do you have and why do you say you are not enjoying it?

Is the body roll bad?

rear sway bar

if you do pull it out, ill buy it off ya, i live in the nt, they have a problem with no sway bars, but i never had any probs in queensland, i have 6in springs 2in body with 35s, and yes it does body roll a bit but its worth every bit for the increase in articulation, but yeah ill buy it.'

I havent had mine on for over 2 years.. Dont miss them. They hold up my dryasabones in the shed!

As long as you realise your not driving a sports car, and get used to it, take it easy for a day or 2, then drive it accordingly you will be fine.

My mate gets in my truck and shits himself as he is used to an ex race RX7, its rough as guts to get in, no suspension at all, mine just happens to be the opposite end of the scale. He wants to put knee scrapers on my mirrors..

I didnt feel especially comfortable in the shorty with soft rate springs, lifted suspension and muddies so i thought that gettign front swaybar disconnectas was worth it.

i'd love to rig up the rear factory swaybar disconnect... means you can run radically soft spring rates on road and still have some semblance of handling.

Makes the ride a lot nicer too in a luxobarge kinda way.

There's no need to take them off if you have them extended to suit the lift you have. I've got a 3" lift and before I had mine extended the was bugger all flex, especially in the front. Now with them extended all is good and rides great on road.

At full flex the rear still hits the top of the arch (with 2" body lift in) and the shock is at full extension. You can just move the spring at full flex.

So is that just using the extended links you can buy off the shelf?

okay i am very confused now i thought the whole idea of sway bars was to limit the amout of travel or flex you get so they body on weird angles which will cause a flop. so if your suspension is maxing out with sway bars on what is the point of the sway bar.

please correct me here as i am very confused on the subject now.

How funnay is it when your on the inside lane of a round-about and you have a small car on the outside. You just flick it a little bit and they crap themselves  They think you're going to fall on them. :D

swaybars stop the swaying of the car - bodyroll almost..
drive along adn swing the wheel left to right, with swaybars, there is little roll, without there will be more.. :)

Mmm.......

I'm interested in the idea of extending them........so if I do that it will still drive pretty good on the road and flex up better?

Should be cheaper than disconnects too right?

Maybe I'll do that...

Thanks for replies....

I think I was quoted something like $35 per swaybar for extended links new.

Surely if you remove the swaybars the shocks are the only thing left holding the axle up? Is it good for them to have them reaching full travel all the time?

Also where are can you get extended swaybar links from?
Do they do adjustable ones?
Im pretty sure my springs would drop out if I removed mine altogether! :?

Took em off my shorty a couple of years ago, never found it a problem on road, little bit more roll but nothing to worry about

I had mine extended at procomp.

Much better on road than with them off.

I'd think there's some upper and lower control arms there too.......
Cossie wrote:Is it good for them to have them reaching full travel all the time?
Nope... there are a few brands that have internal bump stops but most dont, so full compression is not good.

Full compression does more damage than full extension...it's actually pretty common that full extension the shock travel is the limiting factor, but it's almost never that way on compression.

So where can I get longer links then?

Any good 4wd suspension place should be able to get them - I was asked if I wanted some when I bought my lift kit.

It's often something that is never mentioned or offered when getting suspension lifts, but without, your not getting the full benifits.

I recomend you don't get the quick disconnects, just get extended links if you're going to keep the sway bars. Yes they are quick to disconnect but unless you are on perfectly flat ground you'll have a lot of trouble getting them back in. Just as easy to unbolt them if you want to wheel. ;)

GuJohno, how much did the procomp extensions cost you?

I drilled the quick disconnects holes out slightly so they easier to take off... Yeah sure the additional movement might eventually flog them out in which case I'll get another short section of tube and drill some more holes in it... big deal.

I'm not too shure, plus they gave me a good deal.
Best to just give them a call.

Well ive decided to pull the swaybar out ...........gonna drive it around for a week and see if I like it, if not I'll think about the extended connectors.
