help with buy
hey
finaly sold my bike.
now im looking for a lux. just wondering what some of your oppinoins are.
i have got $8000 to spend and not many tools but a pretty good machenical aptitude.
1 thing i was looking at is buying a standard cheaper hilux and doing all of the stuff my self or paying ppl to do it.
if you think that i should do that wat would be some of the mods you would do.
they other option is buy one for all of my $ and have most the stuff i want done to it already, as i will probly be able to find one cheaper second hand with the mods than wat i will be able to do them for.
the only thing im wored about is the quality and how thrashed it has been.
thanx heaps
any response grately appreciated.

Id bye a stock hilux if thats what you want. then work out if you want to mod it. you might find that its too small for you and want a larger patrol or cruiser. see how it drives first, then work out what you want to do to it. but i think a hilux would be a preety good choice as the parts are probably more readily available and cheaper too
yeh, im looking at buying a mig now and there not cheap.....about $800 for the one i want, what did you want the welder for exactly, if its only for a few things it might end up cheaper to send the work away to get done, but then you wont learn how to weld (unless ya already do know how..)
all in all, go easy and youll get there eventually. dont rush in i supose, or ya might pay money for something you dont really need

If your going an older lux....look at getting an extra cab. The space behind the seats is magic if you are tall or just wanna stack crap back there. Im fairly tall and a single cab was just that little bit too small for me, plus I had a set of 6x9's and 2 x 10" subs behind the seats
. Best mod I did to my hilux ( it was fairly stock apart from a spring lift) was get a big arse concrete block and strap that to the tray when 4wding it did wonders for the flex since it put some weight over the arse end
hilux pros and cons as i see them...
pros:
toyota have pretty good build quality
good availability of aftermarket gear
ute... if you like that
common so lots of wrecked parts
comes with solid front if older model
longish wheelbase
cons:
factory push-pull steering
underpowered
centered rear diff
ifs in the newer models
common so every ahole has one
longish wheelbase
