Welding sway bars

hey,
Just wondering if it is possible to weld to a sway bar or does the heat affect it?

Possible... yes.... sensible... no.
Why do you wanna chop and weld? If you're chopping it for a reason anyway then make a tube to go over it and a couple of pins and you've got a swaybar disconnect.

I have welded arms to a torsion bar to make a sway bar like an antirock unit.
Yes you can weld it!
Yes it works!
Yes it heat affects the spring steel!

Spring steel requires heat treatment to give it the right properties. Heating or welding the sway bars will effect those properties. Which could lead to failure. The sway bars can be heat treated after welding to regain correct properties. Of corse assuming you have used the correct grade filler rodes whilst welding. You will need to speak to a welding supplyer that knows what grade welding rods to use. Also speack to the heat treatment people before trying anything. The sway bars will not retain there 100% orginal shape after heat treatment too. Hope thats of some use.

Is the swaybar classed as a steering componet? If it is, any modification HAS to be certified, otherwise there goes the insurance and hello Negligence if you have an accident.
Also as in the previous post, you'll change the spring properties of the bar by welding it.
