My first major thing mechanical I did on a engine was replace a cylinder head on a 2L diesel
My tip is
Get a factory service manual for your engine, read it three times and proceed
I had the head off and new one on in approx 6 hrs taking my time, did it quicker the 2nd time 3 or 4 hrs (blown head gasket)

yeah easy as, did my last weekend, 22r, valves kept on reccesing so i got another head and swapped in on the weekend first time took me bout 10 hours start to finish second time 5 hours, including coolant change....
its a really easy job, all you neeed is a torque wrench, feeler gauges for tappets and work shop manual
