ok i no this will be a simple question for someone to answer and i have tried searhing it but can't get a straight answer.
Was there a set manufacture time when sierras changed from leaded to unleaded?
i no the "leaded varients" can run unleaded but is the engine built to take it long term (ie. valves etc) and does any mods or changes of any type need to be done to safely run unleaded fuel? thanks guys oh btw i'm referring to the 1.3L motors. cheers

I'm pretty certain i have read no long term mods are needed as Japan switch to Unleaded a lot earlier than Australia (which was 84 85 
?)
It safe to say back then you could put leaded petrol in a unleaded but not vic versa (i hope i got this right 'cause i was born in 83)

I ran unleaded in my 83 model 1.0 litre for years without a problem.
I changed from super/leaded because my owners manual said at least 90 octane, preferably unleaded. It ran better and plugs lasted longer. I advanced the timing and used higher octane.
Japan have been using unleaded fuel long before our 1986 cut off point.
I now have a 1.3. My 1st one was pre 86, arounf 1984 model. I ran it on unleaded without a prob. My present engine is a 2000 model swift, which has to be capable of using unleaded.
So check your owners manual, or somebodies, see if your model says same.
I can't recommend what fuel is right for your application, I am just saying I had no probs with valve burnout or any other issues.
(I worried over this decision for a while, but alloy heads need hardened valves, anyway, or so I am told)
