I have just replaced my pump in my 4.2 with a reco and It is now running rough and blowing heaps of smoke. Could the timing be out and if it was out would the motor still run or could it just need more bleeding? Could any one give me some infomation on how to set the pump timing up?javascript:emoticon('')

If your gear timing is ok, then the atcual pump timing may be incorrect. Should be a line on the housing of the pump, which coresponds to a matching ling on the timing cover where it bolts to. These should be line to line. If this is all ok, talk to the pump people again. If no luck let me know.

Make sure engine is set with cyl 1 at TDC--mark on crank pulley should be aligned with mark on timing case and valves on no 6 cyl should be rocking--inlet closing and exhaust opening. When installing injection pump, on the drive gear there is a small mark on the drive gear teeth which needs to be aligned with a corresponding mark on the idler gear-gear should be visible with the inspection cover removed. Install injection pump--loosely tighten 3 nuts then rotate pump so mark on the base are lined up with mark inscribed on back of timing cover. Tighten bolts. After bleeding pump/injectors, engine should start. Ideally then you should adjust the plunger lift in the pump with a dial guage to 0.74mm@6deg btdc. You might have accidently introduced some dirt into the system during re-installing.

Here are some pics i took during my recent TD42 re-build. Shouts of timing marks and dial gauge readings during pump timing.
