fender Flares

Just been having a cruise through this Icelandic 4x4 site and there is a page with a whole list of flare manufacturers in Iceland. yes i know its a bit far away but they do make a huge range of fibreglass flares to cover some pretty large tyres. In thhis day and age with it harder and harder to keep our cars legal these might be of use to someone

Go to Bunnings and purchase the plastic weed edging. costs about$5 for 10 metres.

when I got defected for a couple of things one of them was my flares. I had polyurethane sheet covering my tyres. I was told that they had to be changed to a more structural nature as one of the roles a flare had to perform was it had to be able to deflect a pedestrian from the moving wheels

SHEDGUY tried to import some flairs (think it was that mob) from them and they wouldnt export for his troopy on 36x13 on 10's Swampers..

my shorty with 11.5 x 33" 's didnt pass without flares, but cheap ass 'non-structrual' rubber flares passed - and they also passed a random RWC stop as well. I'm in vic but

Have you checked out the edging. I reckon I could bend my guard if I hit the edging hard enough and it wouldn't flex. If you wanna pay for a guard and paint you are welcome to prove me wrong

doesnt ARB sell something similar to the "garden edge" flare...........they look a bit nicer (i prefer the garden edge) but arnt they the same sort of contruction??????

Queensland has a rule that is something like "the edge of any material (for flares) has to have a 5mm diameter radius", so that it wont cut pedestrians or similar

Think you'd find most states have a similar rule. That's be the reason why the truck wheels have that turned over lip.

yeh but truck wheels also have pertuding wheel nuts that would destroy the side of another vehicle let alone a pedestrian!

Yeah they are made from rubber.
This is the first I have ever heard of a flare supposed to be able to "deflect a pedestrian", I honestly don't think it is true.
Arn't the flares are there to cover the tyres and attempt to stop rocks from flicking up into other cars?

covering the tires also stop people gettin wiped BY the tires.. another reason container Skel trailers were forced to put chain along the sides, to stop people falling into the space and getting hurt (dont worry about the fact that theres a 20ton container on top !
It wouldnt really suprise me if it was true - think of some of the other fucked up laws out there.

Your right people...the bunnings flares do crush the guards before they are damged themselves as seen on my once pristine front passenger guard

If you saw my car you would realise how strict we were on making sure everything was as road worthy as possible. The flares were an obvious one that was easilt fixed with some new flares. You will be surprised at what is and isn't road worthhyrequirements. Just because people get away with stuff doesn't mean anything. I have passed rwc and roadside inspections before with my previous flares.

yes but they are inly about an inch wide which means there is a lot more strength in the rolled rubber edge and the steel insert than a 5-6" flare required to cover a seriously big tyre that people are starting to use.

Apart from objects (stones sand mud ect )
The flares are required to Diffuse Spray , Take a look at a GP on a wet day they cant see thru the spray .

This 80 series on 44's in in NSW and got the flares and hydro steer kit sent out from Toyota Iceland.
