Changing my radius arm bushes out for some Haultech flexy ones this weekend. To remove the old ones, and insert new ones do I need a press or will a F.B. Hammer do the job?

Sometimes you have to cut the old ones out, as the steel outer tube will surface rust itself to the radius arm. Can use a hacksaw for this job.

Use a simple press to replace the new ones, the outer tube should have an arris (chamfer) on one end to allow easy alignment and starting.

Yeah, you could use a hammer and some dollies/plates to install, just not as accurate.

Hammers are so versatile.

Had mine done a few weeks ago .... took the car down to my mate Bob at Allset springs where we put the car up on the hoist, used his adjustable stands etc to remove the arms then he pressed them out with his 20 ton press .... wasn't a simple job ... I mean the press had plenty enough power but getting them out and the new ones back in straight wasn't as simple as I would have thought. I mean I could have done it all at home too but it's a lot easier with the right equipment.

I think doing it without a press is doing it the hard way. I would suggest you at least take the arms to someone with a press and pay them a few bucks to make your life a lot easier. Better still drive it to a suspension place or workshop and have them do the whole job for a few bucks more.

You can fold them in with a big screw driver and a hammer and then bash them out (see rough ) last time I pressed mine in I froze them over night and it made the job easyer.

Remove the arms and take them to somewhere with a press... you'll regret it if you dont! (trust me!)

its possible to put the new ones in without a press. You need a long bolt, two washers as big as the bushes (but with a small hole in them if you get what i mean), a nut and a rattle gun. Hold the arm in a vice to make it easier. the bolt goes through the first washer then through the new bush, the control arm, the other washer and then the nut. Hold onto the nut with a spanner and let rip with the rattle gun. You'd be amazed at how easily it pops in like this. Use a little smear of grease to help it through. Just like your own mini press.
