12HT Noise :S

Heya, im nearly 17 and have bought my first car, a very clean 89 Sahara with the 12HT under the bonnet.

I have recently noticed a noise that i dont like! It occurs at around 2000RPM and becomes louder the harder u push the motor through the rev range. The noise sounds like a squeel but not a belt squeel more a bearing on its way out squeel.

A) i noticed that the little idler wheel thingy (dunno specific name) at the top of the motor that allows u to adjust the tension on the a/con belt feels wobbly but the nut is tight (know where i mean?).

B)But then again it sounds like the noise is comming from the passenger side of the motor and i noticed when driving it yesterday i was doing around 70km/h in 4th going down hill and couldnt hear the noise but then started climbing a hill, and on the climb i put my foot into it and the noise came in when the motor was made to work a little. Which makes me think could the turbo's bearing or bushes (what ever they use in the Toyota CT26 Turbo) be on its way out? Though i really doubt that is the case (well im hoping) as it hasnt lost any power. Does the Turbo (CT26) on the 12HT make alot of noise as in spooling up and down cause i have never in the 2-3 months of owning mine really heard it making the typical turbo whistle tho it must be okay cause the green Turbo L.E.D on the tacho comes on and off. The Red L.E.D warning light has never lit up so im guessin it must be okay.

So please feel free to put ya 2 bobs worth in cause, would be interested to what others may think it could be, even though i know its hard to describe a noise through typing, but Meh give us some ideas.

Ava Good One

take you belts off and try rev it up. if it needs to be under load leave the water pump belt on and take it for a drive. most turbos will whine when boosting

Cheers Ruggers, took the little air con belt tensioner pully thing off to inspect the bearing it has a bit of play so on the weekend ill take the a/c belt off and give it a go see what the verdict is.

1 other thing the bloody motor wont switch off, the lady i bought it off said sumtimes if the motor gets wet it wont turn off. I gave under the bonnet a quick hose on the weekend, now i turn the ignition off, turn the Turbo timer off and the thing keeps runnin, to turn it off i gotta pop the bonnet and push this diapham on the drivers side of the motor which connects to the air intake (steel tube that goes over the motor not the one with TURBO writen on it the one with TOYOTA, hahaha if thats any help) not sure what the hell is goin on, the lady said it usually fixes itself but Lucky she told me how to turn it off huh!

hey troy nice firts car!! i've just purchased one of these myself and love it !! you might also want to check your exaust gaskets or manifold i have seen or heard a few exaust leaks that sound like squeeling belts or whisle and found it to be a leaking exaust manifold gasket which would explain why its from the left side of the motor. how many k's on the dial? and just a question how many k's do you get from a full tank? mine seems to be very thirsty its an auto but im driving it lightly as diesiel costs more than beer!!! and am probobly only going to get 500k's out of this 90 ltr tank

check that your belts are tight around the water pump/clutch fan. They have a habit of squealing when the fan kicks in under load, particularly at higher rpm, because the force required to spin the fan at speed is obviously a lot higher than at low rpm.

Aye Vando3 Bundy. Yeah i love my old truck, ummmmm she has done 336 000km 5sp/Man only paid $10 000 for it around 3 months ago, it was the cleanest truck i saw at the time i was lookin, Im stoked its a Sahara (gotta love the fridge! :D ). To be honest i wouldnt hava clue how much i get outta a full tank, ive drivin it around 300kms since i bought it as i dont have my licence only learners (7 weeks to go). Though i filled it up absolutely full full have travelled around 120K and the gauge has only just started to move off the full mark, so im not sure how fast the gauge drops but at the moment im happy with it, i travelled around 150K on a quarter of a tank, so im not sure if thats good. :? How do you find the Auto? do u lose alot of power through the torque converter seein as tho its an older style auto?

And after reading your post i found a broken stud on the exhaust manifold, Near cyl #1, the one that holds the little bracket for the dip stick. i was able to pull it out and there is soot all the way up the stud and on the inside of the nut, which tells me it must be leeking, that may explain why it squeeled louder under load goin up the hill the other day. Will get a new one this weekend put it on and see what happens.

To get to it do i move the A/C compressor and disconnect the the turbo plumbing (i.e Airtake thingies that go over the motor)?

Cheers Troy
