transfer myth

Other than a maruti case is there such thing as a 1l transfer that will bolt straight up to 1.3 wt flanges. Apparently there is a one of a late 84 that will fit.

I have been out to a few of the main zuk wreckers in perth and they have never even heard of one.

I have even (much to their dislike) asked them to swap flanges around to see if they fit.

If there is such a swap possible what am I looking for:
Does the 1l case have:
1. 4WD switch?
2. hand brake drum ?
3. must be just late 84 or late 84 and above?

Does the 1.3 nt transfer have better gearing than the 1.3 wt transfer???

I was under the impression I could a transfer with better gearing to go in my 89 1.3 wt???

A friend of mine had a 87 model 1l suzuki.

I know didn't believe it either till i saw it's papers... so maybe there are a few 1lt's out there with upgraded transfers (after all thats prob where maruty got the there design from )

RB . He is after the 1ltr box.

The transfer is out of the late 83/84 1ltr's
The have the 4wd light.
They have the handbrake on the back of them but this can be taken off and a flange put on there.

It must be from around that era as these look externally the same as the 1.3 box. Earlier ones are different mount and different case.

Pics below are of a 1.3 case but my 1ltr looks the same.

nuggs, Any 1l transfer with the same mounting plates will do. The rear output shalft spline is the same on all serrias, so take the handbrake off and put your flange on. As for the in put and front out put they are a smaller shalft. When you are at the wreckers getting a transfer get a 1l tailshaft. Now pull the unis apart and make up a custom shalft using 1half of the yoke on the transfer end. (hard to exlpain but easy to do) Even if you pay some one else to do this and use new unis it should be nowhere near 950.

Nicbeer,

I had a look at a 1L case today(so the bloke said, it was from sj40) it had a 4WD light, it had hand break, it looked like 1.3 yet flanges did not swap over as splines were different, I had him try there and then.

Any thoughts???

Thanks Rhett,

I was wondering if something like this could be done :)

rhett...

they are not the same for the rear output shafts...

1lt without 4wd switch are smaller in diameter but the same spline count.

The one i made my rear wheel discoecct out off and the one we are putting in matts car do not have a 4wd switch but they fit the 1.3 flange, only on the rear output though.

The mysterious 84Tcase is a rather elusive creature. Many times mistaken for one of it's earlier brothers the 84tcase....................... :D

SJ410-1 (9/81-8/83) didn't have a 4WD light switch.

SJ410-2/3/4/5 (9/83-87) with 4WD light switch/handbrake drum but lower ratio is same case as SJ413-1/2/3 N/T (11/84-87) w/handbrake drum and SJ413-4/5/6/7 W/T (88-4/96) w/o handbrake drum and bigger flanges (except SJ413-4 1/88-8/88)

MG410 Maruti N/T (90-92) w/handbrake drum and N/T flanges

MG410 Maruti W/T (92-99) w/o handbrake drum and has W/T flanges

Podge,

Don't mean to be ungrateful as you have provided some fantastic info but as I am not familar with all the model numbers you quoted can you possibly tell me :

My vehicle is an 11/89 SJ70 1.3l WT, which of the above 1l transfer cases with the lower gear ratio has the correct size splines to fit 1.3 wt flanges if it is at all possible???

Nuggs, your model is equivalent to a SJ413-6. Should have a G13BA 1298cc engine. Your best bet is to get a 1.0L transfer case out of an MG410 Maruti W/T (92-99) if possible but others from 9/83 (w/4WD light) will bolt in. You would have to remove handbrake drum on anything that comes out of a N/T.

Podge,

One last ? ............... hopefully :D

with the case from 9/83 1l NT (with 4WD light) aside from the hand break drum/flange will the other 2 flanges need to be swapped over to 1.3 flanges as well or will they bolt up to my drive shafts ok??

Thanks again.

Nuggs, the 1.0l flanges are different to both types found on a 1.3l ie. N/T and W/T, so yes you will have to change flanges. If you are keeping your existing transfer case, best to take the flanges off it and put on the 1.0l case shafts. Theory is that they will fit on but I've also seen them not fit when they should have.

Yeah I had that experience yesterday. Found a 1l case with 4wd light asked the guy to swap flanges from from 1.3 WT and hey whadda you know didn't fit :x

Just a matter of going from wrecker to wrecker till I find the right one I think.

Thanks for putting up with the endless questions, much appreciated :)

You need a flange for trying them out? I have got a 1L and a WT spare i think.

I can understand your frustration. The inputs are definately all the same and by memory the P/No.s were the same for front and rear output shafts, hence my theory of all the flanges being interchangable. Practice is different for some reason, which is typically Suzuki.

Why don't you just buy the gears or the whole case if you have to and take the gears out and put them in yours? Would save a lot hassel, gives you more selection with what you can buy too.

I have a Maruti 94 WT case and I already contacted you about possibly selling you the 1L gears and upgrading to lower ratios. If you can't change the gears yourself either I could do it for you or just swap cases and I'll take yours out and you can keep the gears as spares, I'm pretty sure the cases are the same but just taking the gears out would be the easiest sure fix.

Up to you but I doubt you will find any newer or lower km 1L gears. I'm not desperate to sell them or to upgrade, just thought that if I was in your position I would probably be pretty stoked if this opportunity arose.

Anyway, good luck.

all 1ltr cases have the same gearing, late cases 83 onwards i think had the switch light, and WT and NT flanges slip right on.

NT and WT 1.3 cases have the same gearing, not as low as the 1ltr, but the NT 3.9 has lower diff gearing than a WT 3.7.

Podge, your specs may be wrong if your getting your info from a U.S website as the U.S never got the lower geared 1ltr case.

Pretty much the info that you have mentioned I have put forward earlier.

As mentioned theory and practice seem to be different things when it comes to fitting 1.3 flanges to the 2nd series on 1.0l transfer case.

Which specs are you referring to that might be from a US website. The US didn't get the 1.0l Sierra, so specs are going to be pretty hard to come by. Any info I quote are Australian specs and if it relates to genuine parts my info refers to the market that Suzuki codes as E24 ie. Australia

Yes you did, whatever.

If 1.3 flanges dont fit, its the earlyer case, if they do its the later case, its as simple as that, you cant just pull out a model number/part number for a wrecker and expect to get the right case, generaly if it has a switch light and its from a 1ltr then its the right one.

Iv had 3 1ltr switch light cases they all fited 1.3 flanges, iv also had a earlyer 1ltr case, verry different, that case is now in christover's zook.

I must have found the only 1L case in perth that has 4WD switch but........DOES NOT FIT 1.3 FLANGES :bad-words:

Looked at 3 more today.................no luck

Most from earlier models. One guy tried to tell me a 1.3 case was from 1L .......HA! can't pull the wool over my eyes, Ive been on the outer limits forum :D

Do the maruti cases have transfer hand brake as well??

I think Maruti 1.o litres have same flanges as WT zooks, but I could be wrong.

Best way to check case type is spin the input, count the out put, and work out its gearing.
If its 12% lower than yours, and flanges interchange its what ya want :)

You can use hybrid yokes of 1.0 ans 1.3nt as unis are same size (just different clips).
