96 GC electrical issue

Hi guys

I thought I would post this int he jeep specific forum as its probably a common jeep issue:)

What happens is one of the following:

1) driving along and the power goes out, lights, dash everything motor keeps running, then a second or two later it comes back and runs fine Everything works ok after this except the clocks reset.

2) jump in the car in themorning and theres no power (after the doors just opened by the remote) , swear a curse a bit, then it either starts or pop the bonnet - and still no power - seconds later the light under the bonnet comes on and its back to normal.

is it just a loose connection somewhere? or something else?

The leads to the battery are tight, and not broken, however sometimes the earth strap is rather HOT :)

any ideas before I take it to a auto-eleccy and spend my money? :)

Thanks
matt

sounds like a dodgey connection for sure check the resistance between the negative terminal of battery and a the common earth points

hot earth strap indicates current flow so you have a potenial difference between your earths

check with a multi meter first troubleshoot then replace saves money in the 1st place and time in the long run

Take a spanner and disconnet BOTH battery terminals. Clean both extremely well. Have some anti-corrision stuff on hand and use same when re-connecting the battery terminals.
Get to the starter motor terminal as well and clean it well.

Problem will disappear - a given.....

Re-terminated the earth strap today and its working fine

The end that screwed onto the battery was alittle corroded.

hasn't done it since lets hope it stays this way:)

Ok almost back to square one :)

I have replaced the earth strap and I'm no longer having everything turning off (good I guess)

now all I am stuck with si occasionally the clock just resets as if i've lost power.

And this usually only happens when I start the vehicle?

A while Ago I was talking to a auto sparky and he suggested I needed to fix something in the door as its a common fault - I do believe this "common fault" usually stops the windows winding etc?

I dont have this problem, mine just looses power during cranking then when started its fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks
matt
