At my work have about 6 different brands of welders, we mainly use Migomag (400amp) and Lincoln (455amp) welders
You will not go wrong with Migomag, I personally bought a reconditioned Lincoln 255amp with Remote wire feeder for $1200 and have been using it quite a lot with out any dramas
Make sure you get a 15amp outlet fitted if you welder requires it (migomag 180 from memory does) cost me $180 and unlike some others out in the sticks (jimboomba) I can weld all day without any problems

ive got one of the cheaper ones its a Toolex 160 amp, made by SIP, im more than happy with it, i only use it occasionally, but it will weld 6mm plate no worries, ive used it to knock up a few bits and pieces for my truck, ie sliderr, rear bar, modifying bullbar for bodylift, cost $600

if ur spending around the 1200 dollar mark why not look at the procraft 240's? they are 240amps at 15amp, bloody good welders

The procrafts have a lower quality transformer in them, average user would proberbly never have a problem though

Go the migomag, have just welded together 50m of 6mm chequerplate together without a hitch, the unit is a 260 amp (15 amp plug) but use on 10 amp plugs, buy the biggest machine you can as you can always turn it down, have sucessfully welded 12mm plate
and if you can get a remote wire feeder makes life a whole lot easier.
Spend the money one on a good machine and you can go wrong, Have mates that have other machines that were cheaper....... smaller..... and they wish they had spent the money right in the first place. I know that I have blown the budget of 1200 but you get what you pay for.

they still go strong and still weld awesome.

We have had a migomag 240 for 7 years now and havn't had any major problems apart from doing the fintering caps, but it does get used all day every day.
