Diesel Oil Recommendations

Hi Guys,

Seeing as I have only had my new hilux 91 DC 2.8 diesel a couple of weeks and dont have any service records I was going to be doing a service on it either this weekend or next.

Stuff LIke Oil change, oil filter change, fiel filter change, radiator coolant flush.

So I was wondering what recommendation for oil do you guys have. I used to use the Castrol Magnitec but this is for petrol engines and they dont make a diesel version.

Also, what others servicing should I be doing, it has 138k.

Cheers and thanks in advance.

I use Fuchs 15W40 in my cruiser with no probs. But there are a lot of oils that'll do the job well. Castrol, Penrite, Shell etc. Much of a muchness when it comes to the good name brand oils methinks.

As for your Castrol Magnitec DON'T USE IT. My friend did oil testing when he was at university and the Castrol Magnitec showed up as one of the worst for protection (never did find out the best). I used to use it aswell until he told me that. I like the shell stuff for diesel, but Toyota use a Mobil oil. You will also get confused by all of the different viscosity ratings as all of the brands recommend a different viscosity for the one vehicle. If you can find a 10W50 you will have the best of both worlds; light start oil that gets around your engine quickly but runs thick enough at a high temp to provide protect on long hauls.

this is far too thick for a toyota diesel engine. in cold weather the oil would be like tree sap, and your oil pump would be working overtime to get it through your engine. If you have piston skirt cooling i can guarantee with a 20/60 oil they wouldnt be working!

stick to a 15/40 oil as recomended by toyota for the australian climate, 15/40 is good for almost all conditions youl see in australia.

Shell rimula X is a great oil. Castrol oils (GT Diesel and RX Super) tend to have less detergeant content which can mean that sludge builds up easier in your engine. Valvoline is also a good oil, and is often the cheapest. I use Shell Rimula X as my car has always used it.

Thanks for the replys, much appreciated.

I think I will check out the Penrite, I used to use in a VK commodore and was pretty happy with it.

Plus as a bonus it is 15/50 instead of the standard 15/40.

Cheers

Shell themselves recommend not using Rimula x as it is too high of a grade for passeger diesels; and as such may cause glazing. It also costs more and will give no added benefit to your 4B. Rimula D is what you want if going shell, from the horses mouth.

who said there was anything wrong with it.

its a good oil, and is often the cheapest. Only reason i dont use it is cause my truck's used rimula X all its life.

I use penzoil long life in mine every 5000 kays and have never had a mechanical problem.
By the way whatever oil you choose make sure you change it and the filter every 5000kays religiously, with the 2.8 tojo they can't handle extended oil changes, even though they recommend 10000 (yet another toyota inherent fault).

Once again, thanks a lot guys.

A wealth of information.

I will be doing oil changes every 5000 as I am used to doing this with the commo I had pre Hilux so that wont be a problem.

Seems like as with most things that there are varying opinions and people have had success with the different types of oils.

I think I will go and check then out, but as said previous will start with the Penrite as have had good expreriences in the past.

Cheers

have a look at the photos in the Nissan section of WOOPS TD42 after 560,000klms. There is no wear, and you can still see cross hatching in the bores from new
oil and filters every 5000 with rimula x.. thats good enough for me!

Bogged,

When used from new, great. It is only old engines it should not be used in.
