Anybody know of this brand of winch, how reliable they are and are parts readily available. They are price competitive and are thinking of purchasing the 9000lb.

I'm almost 100% sure that the Thor is a T-Max, Ox, Brawn, all rebadged. If you get the chance to see them side by side they appear the same and have the same specs. 4x4 Aust had a comparro in Sep 2004 in which they state that the T-Max, Ox and brawn are the same, all made in China. So which ever of those you can gety for the best price. I believe the one to steer clear of is the Magnum which is now renamed something I can't remember. I see Repco are selling a 9500 winch that looks like all the others I've mentioned as well and it's only $999, Pg 28 of last months 4wd monthly.

U serious?
The magnum is made by Warn, in the same factory. I wouldnt wipe my ass on anything made in China!

Warn 4.6HP motors are made in brazil with the nice bits of plastic that melt when it gets hot.
I'd rather buy a T-max which seems to be the best of the the Chinese ones, and spent some time tidying up the wiring.

the magnum doesnt have the 4.6hp motor so its pretty irrelevant where its made (as long as its not China it'll do for me anyway!)
Does anyone actually have any specs on the Tmax motor compared to a Warn anyway?
and I've never seen a melted warn motor yet, but feel free to post up lots of pictures of melted motors to prove me wrong...

The Magnum range is now called Tabor or something similar. They are just old design warns. So the 9000lb Tabor is just an old 2.5hp xd9000.
As for chinese stuff being crap I have never tested them. But just cos warn have been the must have for the last 30yrs dosent mean one bit they are the best.
If your going to bag them atleast quote actual stuffed winches.
ie
I have seen two brand new X9's sold via toyota crap themselves. One was a motor issue, the other was the brake wasnt installed properly (and still doesent work real well).
Also seen Warns put back together wrong and the brakes dont work.

The magnum is brought in by ARB and the tabor is brought in by Ateco.
Otherwise same winch.
I have a magnum and yes I burnt out a motor
I took it back to ARB and they replaced the motor under warranty
Apparantly it was the first one to burn out, no probs since.
So if you go slow and steady they do the job

Add Milemarker to that list as well. They all these new ones appear to be exactly the same.

Im not limiting my theory just to winches....EVERYTHING made in China is dog shit - not just winches!!!
thats why it always says on the box if its 'made in China' - its like the government health warning on cigarettes!

Wait a few years, people used to say the same about things made in Japan.
Most things made in Taiwan these days are pretty good quality, and the chinese government keeps insisting it is part of china

I'd rather buy something made in Ethiopa!

The difference imho is not design features etc which are often fine (though not always I guess) on Chinese-made stuff. It's the quality of the steel itself. Chinese-made steel things are never in my experience anywhere near as durable as steel things made in the UK, Germany, Japan, the US, or Australia or I guess probably France etc as well. The steel is softer and more flawed ie more likely to have weak spots in it.
So if the quality of the steel is not so much of an issue, like with a PC case or something, I don't care if it's made in China, but if it needs to be really hard, strong, and durable steel like tools or winches, I'd be hesitant to buy Chinese stuff.
This is just my experience; it may be improving I guess, but I don't think that the quality is close enough yet. Korean maybe... not Chinese.

Its not just steel stuff though, I bought a cheap chinese hosepipe from bunnings a while back. It leaked from the connectors at both ends, the spray nozzle kept getting blown off and then it kinked and split in three places. I probably used it about 6 times.
If a product has to do actually something (other than just sit there like a pc case or an ornament), I always try to avoid the chinese cack!
