Every time im on a steep angle facing up hill, oil pisses out of it. What does this mean? It is located under the manifolds just above the starter on an SD33 MQ. Looks like some sort of breather. Suggestions and solutions please

its abit hard to get a perspective of where it is from that pic....
but the only place oil should drip out is a small 1 inch pipe that comes down from the manifold area...
from that pic that looks like a welsh plug, though there shouldnt be ever any oil coming from that...
perhaps a pic with more detail of surroundings.....

Are you sure oil isn't settling in it from another leak, then falling/flowing out when the angle allows it? Just a thought. Unfortunately it's not that easy to make out what's going on in the photo.
what the?

the photo looks like a hole in the block, but its not. It is difficult to get a good photo of the area. It is a square box that sits on a tube which looks to be going down towards the sump thru the block. I thought u would recognise it screwey. its about 2 inches cubed with a one inch hole, and has a plate inside with a gap at the top (stop water etc i suppose). Thats why i thought it was a breather. But why oil comes out???

is it threaded matt, as in, has a sensor of some sort been removed and not replaced? how far back from the front is it??
what the?

Its not threaded, just a plane hole. Im thinkin something is removed. Might need a workshop manual. It is right up the back b4 the bellhousing, which is why oil pours out facing a steep angle.

at a guess and from your description im saying is the crank case breather, all SD33's have this prob, mine did, and im not sure on a fix for it,.
what the?

Thats exactly what i was thinking. Yours spewed oil on a steep hill too? Maybe i overfilled the sump?

i have known a few that have done it, my old SD33 did it, my mates does, and a few other i have seen, no sure what the cause was, but it wouldnt hurt to check your oil level, but i doubt that is the cause,

Ok - it is a crank breather but on the MQ early model patrol it vented down the side of the block and out onto the road - this used to spil when on steep inclines - Nissan later rectified it by having it return to the sump thus avoiding the problem....

Thanks Mark. dont know what ill do about it. Ill either not do big hill climbs (as if!) or ill have to go up them twice as fast!

Yep as i posted a tube from the manifold as i discription. mine did it too i have had 3 non turbo SD33s all have done it...

is there anyway that you can put a breather extension on it to allow a more steep angle?

the amount of oil u loose really is minimal..... it might look like alot on the ground but its only gunna be maybe 100ml....
there is like 9 litres of crank case capasity in these motors, so there really is very very little to have to worry about.....

only problem with that is that the oil can make rocks preety slipery.......and thats what happened on the weekend. i was in front of matt, and carried on to make room for others to pass through, so i dont know how they went, but im sure it was not the best.......

yeh it happend to me at nissan trials and at appin a coupla times.....
but there is little u can do about it apart from sitting a bucket under it...
u cant pipe it anywhere cause it will just sit in the pipes and the suction of the motor isnt high enough to suck it back into the rocker cover...

i cant remember how low that breather went, but there is a possiblity you could TEE it into the return line for the vac pump behind the alternator,.........................only a sugestion at this stage, i dont have an SD33 to look at anymore.

i think that breather is about level with the pipe from the vac pump to the block... that pipe then goes up to the vac pump and then the vac pump will be trying to pump up, not to mention that litle pump is only small and wont like that amount of oil spilling into it all at once.....

i mean, TEE the breather into the return line into the block, so any oil feeds back into the sump, but then again it woulnt be acting as a breather, so there would be a few mods to make,

Looks like similar to where the crankcase breather pipre came out of the L28 so could be similar. Should have a steel pipe poking out and then a hose running to manufold?

The L28 breather is different.....
it breathes for the rocker cover
this one for the SD33 is a crankcase breather.
They always have a small amount of oil around the very bottom rim of the pipe and leak going up big hills....
I spose theoretically if u spent the time, u could rig up a T peice that pipes down into the crankcase as shawn said... thought all u would be doing is recirculating the fumes then.....
So u would have to add another breather pipe further up the block with a small filter on the top of it about level with the air intake to enable crankcase breathing.....

yes Jeff, if you ran the existing breather back into the crankcase as stated by me above, this would return the oil, yoy couyld then tap a fitting into the highest point of the breather so the fumes can escape,

just drill and tap a hole in the top of tapet cover, tack a plate on the inside
for a baffel and screw in pipe connector and run hose to air filter.
block of original breather
cheers beefie
