Hi there I've recently scored some second hand swampers with about 60% tread on them and was thinking of getting them "grooved" through the middles to get more edges, any thoughts..pros/cons... the pic shows ya what i mean

I believe it makes them more flexible....

Doesn't it make them better on a wet road as well as it squeezes the water out better?
Also i think that technique has a funny name,...

its called siping (syping)
and allows the tire to flex just a bit more

siping is different to grooving. siping is making 'cuts' through the tread block without actually removing any material, which increases traction and flexibility without negatively impacting wear rates. grooving is the removal of material to create more and smaller tread blocks - grip and flexibility are further increased in most offroad situations but wear is accelerated.

Here is a siped MTR. Improves grip a lot, especially on wet rock. In the US there are companies that will sipe your tyres for you quite cheaply.

siping can make a tyre last longer, but grooving will not.
