soon to be getting my 5.12 ring and pinion set from overkill. just after what needs doing excactly to get the clearances right etc
i believe i'll need to replace the sierra ring gear bolts with vitara ones as the sierra are too long?
how much shimming of the pinion is needed (round abouts) to get pinion right? i know every diff and its measurements are all different hence the need for shimming but has anyone got away with the original shims only? any other thoughts or how toos greatly appreciated.

A diff centre from the right Vitara = 5.12 gears with no stuffing around

dont use the vitara diff centre as they break.
i have built a few of these. Some of them i have shimmed the pinion some i havent. If you dont shim it the crown wheel sits over to one side a little, nothing major.
The side gear shims fit perfectly over the pinion so you can use them if you have any old centres laying around. You will need approx 0.5mm shim.
Of the ones i have built none of them have broken so do it however you please

They may at some point - but with 220k out of mine I don't think the centre itself is the issue - or Vitara owners would have saved up for their own "Weapons of Mass destruction" to launch at Hammamatsu.
Fitting and aligning it to the Sierra was always going to require a bit of skill and care - but that doesnt mean you need a "custom crownwheel" or anything like that. Ratios come down to how many teeth they have and how many your diff can clear, plus what can bolt in - it's pretty simple really.

What drugs are you on???
I have seen people put the whole alloy vitara centre into the sierra diff housing and they
DO break. They are weak as piss!
Who said anything about a custom crown wheel???? I dont think he requires a lesson on "how to tell what ratio it is".
So how many 5.12 diffs have
YOU built?
The guy asked about building the diff and the shimming required. You obviously have had no experience in doing it so keep your ridiculous comments to yourself, they arent helping anyone!

Andrew .. Mick is refering to the front diff centre with the alloy carrier ... Yes you can bolt em into a sierra diff .. but they tend to explode.
The rear on the Vits is pretty tough unit.

Good call Mick,
The main problem with the alloy centre if you do run them is they
The rear center will not fit the sierra housing its heaps bigger.
I run alloy case vit centers front and back 5.12s .
With only occaisonal ruff treatment with slipery 35s,
I only expect them to last 40,000 ks in the rear mostly 110 kph for a couple hours each day, The ring and pinion won't last in these housings as there is no oil gallery for the pinion bearing so the the bearing starves for oil at any speed, there is to casings in alloy the ones that have the oil gallery will explode when tourqed up with a few revs and a rock hopper.
So do as mick sugests or you will have minimal reliability.

Not good if you want the same ratios front and rear.... where did the 43 teeth come from FFS?
