How do you propose to reconcile the environmental concerns and the damage caused by 4WDs?
problem solved

I think a start would be for parks to spend some money on track works and education .
Do a little work in the pig sty and the marsh would not get used and abused which I think is the main problem . four or five cheap as railway sleeper bridges 70% of the problem solved.
Also that area is only realy good for going bush unless you feel the need to lockup more of the state for bushwalking only.

Instead of asking what people are going to do, tell us what your going to do. Is there an association that the clubs are affiliated under? Are they aware of the issues and are they looking into it? If o help them out dont just wait for someone else to do the work.
We have the same problems in Victoria, and propably the rest of Aust.
All too often it's left to the same few do do the work while the rest bitch and comlain.

Ok there is a groupe calld the trva (tasmanian recriaton vechical assosiaton)
and they do 3parts of fark all.... thats the long and short of them. they dont give a fark about it.
i dont think there is much that can be done.
open up that website
http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/publication ... mmary.html
and downlode the pdf file...
have a look at the place.
it is farked.
u say build bridges, stupid fucks will just drive round them throuhg the creeks.
south port should be shut off and the keys only be given to propper clubs who need to earn the right to have them.
im going in to parks tomora to have a word with some one.
will see how i go.

Kool, its not good if they close it or make it to easy to get in there, part of the fun is there is acctually some deep mud to drive through, closing of the marsh could be ok, atm the pigsty is still ok for driving thorugh if u have a 1/2 decent 4wd and the marsh isn't quite as deep but will be if people still keep driving accross there.
A few bridges could be cool across the rivers, that would stop the tracks getting wider and wider and wider...
Don;t they want to close it and put a gravel road into the top of the logoon to preserve it or something? if they do that people with there 20ft boats will just drive them in and boat across to the other side a lot more easier so even more people will go in.... Atm you need to go in a good 4wd not a family sedan..
Clubs having the keys though could be a good idea, that would stop rouge group of hoons going in there and trying to go through the deepest mud everywhere, whereas a club )u hope) would be more sensable and stick to certain tracks.

i went down a easter for the first time this season ( ive been going down for nearly ten years ) and was pretty surprised how bad it had been chopped up ( it is really farked ) im a 4x4 nut and i love it but its going to be very hard to argue any kind of futher access ive also heard from some mates it might actually have more to do with forestry wanting to clean up the track as far the Pig stye so they can access the western side of the track.
i'll send letters, sign stuff and try to help keep access but i reckon we are pushing sh*t up hill with pointy stick

Forestry already has a massive road being built just off to the side of the pig pen and it goes a fair way in , i think the greens or some other group have stoped progress on it though, only the base is down, ie lots of logs sideways across the track, we drove up it for a bit until we came to the gate which joins it back onto the mian roads... SO i dunno whether there going to put 2 tracks in near the pig sty :/
Posted: Mon Aug 01, 2005 8:16 am
by Jonesy
um i think it will link up with new forestry road on the other side of the pig stye but they with clean up the south port track from the parks gate too the pig stye, it will be graveled flattened etc

Thats pretty flat as it is, i suppose all the logs people have layed in the water is annoying though.

Southport lagoon has been a playing spot for modded 4 wheelers for years and closing it isn't the answer. For those who dont like the mess, stay the fark away, You bunch of winging wineing sooks. Put it this way if southport gets closed the idiots will only go somewhere else and chop that up. Its not like its prime realestate. You cant even run cattle on it. and the chopped up mud deffinatelly doesnt effect the lagoon with silt or muddying it up. I fish the lagoon and have done for years and it hasn't changed. I dont condone the poeple chopping it up the way they do but hey some people need to release themselves somewhere. By the way did i mention I HATE GREENIES!!!

From their point of view, closing is the answer. No more money to spend fixing up others mess.
What you will need to do is try and reach a compromise.
Work with them and hold a number of working bees.
Try to work out how to educate the people not in clubs.
Sustainable use is what you need to push. Have constructive ideas and solutions to the problems. Or else you have no chance of them taking you seriously.
How many clubs are in Tassie and how many people in total? Use these numbers and the economic benifit your recreation brings to the small towns nearby in your arguement.

1. no money has been spent in years
2. We have compromised! its closed for the entire winter
3. They are not interested in working bees
4. Clubs are the worst offenders so its not the minority that needs educating
5. what they want is for all the 4WD tracks to be able to be driven by the family pajero.
A lot of the southport track is on private property.
How come all public land australia wide that can be used by by the public has to be used in a responsible and non enviromentally damaging way? If 2% of the population is irresponsible why can't 2% of public land be used for irresponsible activities.
Southport lagoon would account for way less than .000005% of public land so why not leave that little portion for the d/heads in tassie and allocate a little play area in all states where no-one touches/fixes/repairs or other wise give a shite about. So people have the option, as in a democratic society, to go get dirty, or play on the rocks, or whatever if they want to.
Private rec parks are made on the mainland but that then doesn't give the freedom to do as you please.
Again I don't go to southport to play, I go there to camp and fish.
With all the mess I love the challenge of getting in there.

most of the damage in that place is caused by the guys that are down there all the time to rip shit up.......
Now dont get me wrong... it sez in this book i have here in the last 6 months there was somthing like 886 Vechicals that went past the gates... now i was one of them.

It is indeed a mess, and closed atm, but will (well it suppose to) re-open in a month. It is indeed very fun getting in aand out to go camping and fishing away from it all. Plenty of fish out there and no one close by to annoy, bar other campers...

As for Clubs being the main offenders in teearing it up.... well i would say they are just the non affilated clubs...
As for the parks spending money down there
.. wat bridge????
The bridge that is there WASNT built by the parks.. that was the TRVA...

The only money parks has spent down there is the gate to keep the cowboys out (which doesnt work) and the counter on the gate...

You personally attacked me with the Grunta or shitebox 4x4 club thing.
I am not in any club and thats the way i like it. I then dont have to put up with the politics and protocol b/shite that goes with it.
BY THE WAY
Im probably one of the most responsible 4x4 people you will ever,( get driven straight past next time I see your sorry arse stuck in the bog), meet.
I hate the way people tear up southport for fun (but I understand it)

I think it should be open to clubs ONLY and clubs should be made response able for the repair of the track. And yes give us (the 4wders) one track to play on but we will have to fix it at the end of the year. Saves closing it all together.
If used right I could be a good thing and the membership of clubs would rise and that wouldn’t be a bad thing either.
But as you all say getting people to see there ways are wrong is the first step to fixing the problem.
That little bit of fun we all have gets used by other people and it becomes a bigger hole or track hence what this closing Southport is all about.
We need to kick in as a 4wd community and help fix and patrol it for our future 4wd children.
Other wise if we don’t put our foot down now we wont have anywhere to go ?
Remember the rope that was slack well its getting longer we need to grab hold

Well this has been talked about 4 years and years..
I have been to the last few TRVA meeting and Pat from No Limits 4wd club has been talking to the paks about this issue..
We did think that some headway was happening but it seems lie they have jst been stringin us along...
It seems to me that parks wil do wat they want weather we like it or not....
Dont wory im VERY keen to keep this open but i cant c it being the way it was..
There is no where like southport anywhere in Tas that u can 4wd and fish.. I will be very dissapointed to c it go.....
Our club is gunna try and fight it but as i said it doesnt really look good....

i beleve it will be another one like the 100's of othere tracks closed for good.
some of with we were ment to be able to get the keys to but no one has seen a key yet.
it is fucked up and pisses me off that a minoritoy ruin it for the majority.
maby it should be preposed that trva afiliated clubs can book the place? and fine the fuck out of any one caught down there. and actualy police it. (more reveneu for parks or who eva)

I agree clubs do make a mess in places like southport!!
6,8,10 vehicles all trying to impress each other, one getting bogged, the next trying to go around, another going cross country to find hard ground. seen it heaps of times.
why not restict it to parties of 2 vehicles only.

Public land should be kept open to all public.
Only go down that route as a last chance to keep it.

Even b4 we wa club we went in in big groups.. we have generally always stuck to the track..
Yes we do try out the big holes that are there.. but they are the original track which someone has long since made a track around... so i cant see that havin a bit of a go in the big original holes hurts anything..
if anything its like is being said its the pussys who go round these holes not jsut once but lots of times and make the track wider and wider...
Just my 2 cents
