Plasma rope

I know this has probably been done, but a search didn't really find what I was after so...

The steel cable on the Warn Hi-mount is shagged, too many years of abuse and is now kinked back under itself, completely jammed. I can see strands poking out through the mess, so it's probably not usable.

The winch might only see 2 or 3 pulls a year, so is it worth replacing the cable with a rope?

What sort of dollars/metre is a decent rope and what is should I be paying for a replacement cable?

If your happy with steel cable and just want to replace it put a wanted add on here.
Because bargans on wire can be had when people upgrade to plasma.
Just an idea.
Plasma is good stuff though.

just do it. get the plasma, it's worth every cent just look after it.

after every trip i take my plasma off and wash it, just the same as my snach strap.
i also didn't think that i'd use mine more that once or twice a year, but already its been more use than a broken wire rope.

and there is the weight saving factor, in a zook this is important :!:, one of the main reasons that i ended up getting it.
as well as the NO STORED ENERGY thingy, when it breaks there should be less damage.

but look around when purchacing the differance was more that $1.50 per meter from dirrerant retailers :!:, i ended up paying $11.60/m for 8mm.

happy winching

As i deal with all tyres of rope in my work, i would go flexible steel wire rope more than plasma, because plasma doesn't last as long believe me i can send pics of some of the rope i deal with and plasma nah not for me

Without question buy rope and not steel cable. Rope may be more expensive and need more maintenance but it's far safer to use and is not going to kill anyone if it breaks.

alright tell me the safety factor for flexible steel wire rope? people only get killed cos they don't know what they are doing full stop, if you don't know what your doing, its easy don't do it.

Even if you look after plasma it still won't last as long as flexible steel wire rope man i work with 55mm plasma rope and that was fucked after about 6 pulls and i photo's of this rope and the pulls

Interesting logic, sh!t does happen, even for the experienced. It’s you life but I'd prefer to get whipped by rope than sliced in half by a steel cable. Each to their own.

if you are not competing buy wire, go 35m x 10mm[warn hi-mount] , quite a few who compete still run wire[XWC]. rope is heaps safer but its like anything hi-tech, big $$$$$ and heaps of time looking after it,...!!!!! and i run rope

All you need to look after rope is a mesh dive bag. After you have washed the bulk mud off the rope, chuck it in the bag and then into the washing machine.

I like the like weight of Plasma but have seen a lot buggered by one rub on a rock or embankment. You can't always slide a cover along to protect it.
Steel wire is cheap and also lasts for years.
Steel wire my practical choice.

Ive had steel rope for years then for comp use i went 11mm plasma and now i would never ever go back to steel. Yeh its more work to look after, Yeh its expensive but Yeh is it nice to use, light, strong, so safe to use and no splinters.

how heavey is your truck my middys is only 2.3t 8mm steel cable for an 8000lb pto i use it twice a month depends and i dont any comp so my recoverys arent fast so i use gloves and make sure it covered by a heavey blanket and if it does tough a rock it will not go i have seen at the winch challange how quick it can happen and those guys do more winching in one event then most off us do in a year go to an winch challage and see for youself i will allways stay with steel unless for comp

Plasma doesn't whip it falls straight to the ground

It still whips dude - depends on the situation.

it will "whip" however due to the low stretch 1-2% at break and no weight the kinetic energy is low and if it its someone the worst may be a bruise or welt, it is inherently safe and will always use it, I get uneasy winchging with steel

I can say first hand that plasma whips. While competing in the Toolangi Nav Nites last year our 9mm rope broke. We had a dampener (ARB) in the centre third but even though it broke near the hook the rope still recoiled through the dampener and managed to land at my feet after it struck me across the chest and arms. I ended up with a couple of bruises and red lines but this was mainly due to the rope being wet and therefore carrying a bit of weight. And yes I was a fair bit clear of the live rope prior to it breaking.

Having said all this I doubt I would be still here if it had of been cable.

People spend big $$$$$$ on there 4b's so what is the big deal in spending $500 odd bucks every 2 years on a safe and more user friendly winch rope. If you look after it properly it should last this long.

 for plasma rope

for the safety factor alone, it's worth the small investment

$270 for 24m of 8mm steel
$460 for 40m of 8mm plasma (fitted)
thats 60% more rope, at less than 60% more $. (what i'm trying to say is that, to buy the same amount of steel would cost the SAME)

no contest really, just try and fit 40m of steel on a W6000.

I had steel cable and only got to use it once cause it was a really hard double line pull off centre and it wrapped over itself and squashed the cable. At $160 for a new cable that you have no guarrantee of more than one use I went for plasma. More expensive but the only downfall that I can see is if you don't look after it. You have to take precautions for abrasion but you also have to take precautions when using wire rope. I now compete as well so there is no question for me. Heaps less fatigue if you have to winch a lot. I had to winch for over 3 hours to get myself out of bog and if I had steel cable I would have been much more fatigued.
