Injecting RB30

I've got an rb 30 lump in my patrol. A friend is wrecking a holden commador. Has offered me the fuel injection sytem. As the motors are the same in theory it should all bolt on. Any ideas on what to do for an air filter can i use all the standard bits in my fuel tank ie the pump and filter etc or will i need to modify them or change for the commador units. Any input or pictures of this convertion would be very handy. Thanks

See if you can get it with head and all and just bolt it on. As for air filter get the one out of the VL and plumb it up easy. You will need the fuel pump off the VL as well and that is it. Grab all that off your mates car and you are set.

you wont need your mates head just his complete inlet manifold and dizzy with the airflow meter, and pull his engine loom, computer and fuel pump. then get a 4.2efi GQ airbox and thats about it. Wiring it up isnt too hard if you can manage it yourself, you will have to knock up a small surge tank and use the existing pump to feed it. Best part is once its injected you can turbo it very simply. Im currently doing mine. Just waiting on a few bits. I will let you know what mine makes at the rear wheels now, injected and finally turbocharged. I have all the wiring diagrams drawn up if that helps.
cheers brunsy

Wouldnt know about that it hasnt happended in the 11 years ive had injected cars. I do however run wooden wheels and candles as headlights because i refuse to accept engineering technology.

Yeah fair call, I'm sticking with the carby 'cause some of the competitions penalise for changed induction systems. How many extra neddies are you getting with the injection?

It certainly is "old stuff' in comparison to what is on offer today, but the carbied 3.0 is so bloody slow. For the price of a new set of extractors and full exhaust i found an alternative that has performed flawlessly and made the heavy GQ fun to drive. Having done this conversion for a couple of friends they are getting 150-160kw @ the wheels on 10psi, on standard existing patrol bottom ends, this power is more than enough for most poeple and I am using some bigger and better bits in my own conversion so hope to see up near 190kw. I might also add all these engines have done over 200 000km and even did it to a 450 000km old one to prove a point. If you shop around or give me a pm you can get everything you need for about 1300 bucks, thats computer, turbo, intercooler injectors. I even have all the wiring diagrams of "how to". As for how much power you make just injecting the RB, i dont think it would be worth the $300 it would cost for all the bits, but you get better cold start , others have claimed a difference in economy. I am going to put a story in ths forum once i have mine up and running with dyno sheets.

Anyone who doesnt agree with brunsy im more than happy to swap my 4.2 carby SWB for a 3.0 SWB that I can chuck EFI on to easy.

The difference in power between an EFI 3.0 and a Carby 4.2 is virtually nothing... the difference in fuel consumption is about 1/2.

Then add on a turbo or supercharger - power is about 50% better on the EFI and still near 1/2 on the fuel consumption.

Sounds like it should be pretty strait foward. Only a surge tank too make, adapt the air fliter off of a 4.2 and fuck about with the wiring. Will have to sort a price out on the injection bits. Got a dyno at work so will try and get some figures as the project progresses. Thanks for your help.
Any chance of some pictures???

i found very noticable gains in power & economy, but the best thing is being able to climb a steep hill and not have to worry about the carby flooding. insted of the surge tank i stuck the primer pump off the vl in the tank

Putting the pump striat into the tank sounds like a good idea. How did you do this? much messing around??

fairly simple. the patrol pump has a rubber mount, so all you need to do is slide the original pump out and the commodore slides straight in and then all you have to do is swap the wires over on the top of the sender.
