Outer Limits 4x4 Board

After having to remove my Free Wheeling hub bolts with a cold chisel in the bush on the weekend, I want to go and buy an allen key the right size so when I put my new ones in I wont have to resort to this again. Anyone know what size it would be?

It wouldnt hurt to have a whole set - up to 10mm

red mav they are 8 mm

probably cheaper to buy a whole set, and you can get metric and AF in the one case for about $30.00

Thanks everyone, looks like 8mm it is, I have a range of smaller ones up to probably 6mm but just need one for these bolts. We tried everything including using the smaller one with a screwdriver jammed in but just stuffed the screwdriver.

yup definitely 8mm.. i carry a spare in my glovebox separate from my tools as they're easy to lose

get an 8mm in hex 1/2 drive and use on a ratchet. much quicker and easier than the key.

It will be part of the Snow Trip report I guess, but in September mag we have missed the August one now. I checked all my car records on servicing and I am really pissed I can tell you. After I pulled out of the challenge with clicking front both front wheels which I thought was going to be CV's I put it in to a repair shop (who shall remain nameless at the moment) in Narre Warren who replaced one RHS swivel bearing and both wheel bearings (cost $1,360) but said the CV's were fine. It still clicked afterwards and they said that was normal (strange it hadn't ever clicked before) but they were the experts so who was I to argue. Anyway short story is its only done 8,000 since then and apart from the fornt wheel coming right off, the LHS when dismantled was totally stuffed as well. It was 1.5 turns loose on the locking nut, the locking tab wasn't bent the right way and there was no seal there to prevent water getting in. The LHS just needs new bearings but the RHS needed a stub axle, disc rotor, calliper, Brake pads, Bearing, new Hub, and of course the 6 new bots we had to cold chisel off. Luckily the tow from Licola to Ringwood was covered by RACV total care. I am not sure if I have any recourse against the workshop or not, I am waiting until Shane gets the job finished and I know the bill before I get back to them.

if you dont get recourse - I'd name em then it'll cost them big time

What he said, always carried in the vehicle, along with custom tools for tightening wheel bearings (nevver needed yet )

Seriously it pisses you off when that happens, I do most of my own maintenance like that so I've become very familiar with Hilux front ends I only go to a mechanic I trust for any detailed engine work.

My driving habits have if anything tapered off over the past 2 years.. I used to do much more mud and water stuff in the early days and the bearings would last 100k not friggin 8k. I am just grateful that I had so much assistance on the day from other club members and a couple of total strangers who didnt get upset about being stuck behind a disabled vehicle for 7 hours. I will keep everyone informed of how I go after I rock up with my box full of broken bits and pieces at the workshop on Saturday.
