How much weaker are the early 10 splines RR axles compared to the late 24 splines....
Is it worth the conversion from 10 ro 24 splines...
What is needed other than side pinion gears?

In case a diff failure occurs in a Rover will it bust the Ring and Pinion

The only good 10 spline is a dead one. They're crap, full stop :bad-words:

Upgrading to 24 splines even is a vast improvment. Search for more info, it's been covered many times :D

I can just see Trav now, stalking 'round with his scoped rifle..." where's that wascally 10 spline, I'm gunna get you "

It would be easier to just get a later Disco 24 spline diff if you are able to locate one.

Answer to your question would be yes, the side gears would need changing as well as the axles of course.

my 10 spline has allways broken the side gears. and every time thay have broke its been nice light off roading. every time i have give it a hideing thay have held up. beats me but 24 spline conversion will be on the cards when i get her on the road again.

I recently asked ARB about converting my front 10 spline locker to 24 spline, and the parts list was considerably longer than just the side gears. I'd agree that just replacing the diff with a s/h 24 spline centre would be easier. Or replace the axles with Maxi 10 splines.

Cheers

I would defenitely convert to 24 splines and get Maxi 24 rather than Maxi 10.
Do it Once Do it Right.

The only times I have borken stock 24 splines axles on my disc( 3 of these) was whent the ARB was engaged and with 32"x9.5 ET(very high traction tyre)

You can just replace the side gears in an rd03 to run 24 spline axles.

However, with the introduction of the 24 spline axles, rover increased the diameter of the journal for the carrier bearings, because breakages occur with the smaller journals.

If you want to modify an rd03 to be the same as the 24 spline rd56 with larger journals, then you need all of the parts that arb listed.

Note an rd56 can not be used in pre-1980 diffs because you can't fit the larger carrier bearings. Nor can you convert the early rd03's with 4 bolt cylinder cap to an rd56.

Are the Maxi 24's really that much stonger than the Maxi 10 splines? I'm talking just the axles here, not the diffs or CV's. Has anyone had a run of breakages on them?

Cheers,

Gordon

From Mal Story (Maxi-Drive)...
10 SPLINE:
App torque capability for axle of 1500 Mpa UTS Hytuf 5635 Nm (4160 ft lbs)

24 SPLINE:
App torque capability for axle of 1500 Mpa UTS Hytuf 7835 Nm (5780 ft lbs)
So a 24 spline axle is about 50% stronger than a 10 spline axle in both are made from the same material.
