Well they cant be bigger (phisically imposible if using the hilux centre), as for stronger i couldn't really say.

Weaker as the pinion is smaller. I know of a few people that have broken 1 or more sets of 5.29`s and have now gone back to 4.88 and haven`t broken 1 yet.

I know the 5.29 from the hiace is weak,
the pumpkin housing is small
the pinion is small ( 7 teeth make it weak by design )
the contact area, width of the crownwheel teeth is about 33mm
But I have a couple of 4.88's here as well
The hiace 4.88 is the same dimensions/size to the hiace 5.29
The other 4.88 is a monster.
the pinion is larger with huge bearings
the crownwheel has teeth about 40mm across, thicker crownwheel
the side bearings are larger as well
The pumpkin housing is also beefier
What I am trying to find out is the 5.29 crown and pinion you can buy (~$500) the same size as the hiace one or is it beefier/bigger, will it fit in say a later 4.1 pumpkin housing with bigger bearings etc... ???
Does someone have the physical dimensions of the crown and pinion ???
beefy 5.29's

Hey Supra,
One guy up this way is running the "BIG" 4.8s apparently are the V6/Turbo diff head, what model had that ratio, im not sure. the pinion is 1/8th " longer, bigger bearings etc. as u mentioned
most late model V6/Turbo were 4.3 or 4.5
so i doubt that anything factory fitted had the "BIG" 5.29s,
the Hiace only has the small 5.29's ones as far as i know.
Cant comment on the size of the aftermarket 5.29 r+p, never seen one

Hi Kiwilux... nice to see another 4wder from this side of the ditch
Did you get out and see the Denny's challenge ?
I've only got one 5.29 spare left and although I was getting them for between $30 and $100 the Hiace ones are getting quite rare ( been looking for another one for two months now ). I would be happy to pay the $450 - $500 for a new crown and pinion if they were actually beefier than the hiace.

I am running 5.29 from precision gears. Same one's that All Pro Offroad sell in the states. so far i've had no problems with them , they have been in the truck for about 12 months. i had standard 5.71 before that and broke 3 sets in the rear in about 6 months. i run a welded rear diff and 35's and drive daily on road. the gears are holding up fine. i got the from a place in melbourne but there are plenty of people selling the brand

Hi guys just a quick question i bought a set of 5.28's from the states a while back, to suit my 4 runner, the crown and pinion gears do not fit in the cradle there is not enough room!!! The gears look very similar to my 4.88's but the crown wheel is thicker??? Is there two different size cradles or diff housing's to fit them in??? Apparenty they are the correct one for my 4 runner??? Can anyone help me out please?????

I also have precision gear 5.29 from the states
the housing has to be machined to fit them the gear is thicker than the std ones they are strong i dare say stronger than the hiace ones

Are you using a 4.88 centre? They are thinner in the housing.

basically try and fit the gears see where they rub or touch the housing get the die grinder out remove material till they fit with some clearance.

Did you look at locktups write-up?
That is a lot to grind out. I'd just get a set of 4.1, 3, 56 centres.

so looking at the picture comparison above, if the factory 4.8 ring gear is thinner does that mean that it is weaker or it still has the same strength as the other ratio gears?

fairly sure the factory 4.8 gears are weaker than the aftermarket ones have blown quite a few of these when i was running them
