hi all,

what sort of brass or bronze do you use to make bushes out of.
ie - throttle body butterfly shaft bushes and dizzy bushes also cv spindle bushes.

any tricks to machining the stuff ?

i've got a heap of delrin around, can i use this instead of metal bushes for the above applications?

Delrin would be alright for light duty like butterfly bushes.

For cv spindle bushes you would need bronze. Do not use brass.

Aluminium bronze has best strength and PV (pressure times velocity) value of the common bronzes. Must have good lubrication to avoid wear, when used for bearings.

Phosphor bronze, while nowhere near as strong as aluminium bronze, has low friction properties and good wear resistance (as long as it is within the allowable pv value) which make it good for bearing bushes.

Some bronze alloys are affected by extreme pressure additives used in some lubricants, but I can't recall which ones (I had a quick look and could not put my hand on the info).

There are leaded bronzes that are also suitable for bearings.

It is phosphor bronze that is most affected by EP additives.
