TB Tweak

Guys i just wanna say a huge thanks, i think this is the best run forum on the net, even though there seems to be a few on the forums that cause shi7 it seems to work for me, especially the mitsu section! u guys rock! :armsup: :D :armsup:

well yeh, sarvo i tweaked up the torsion bars on the swb, and now he is all good, plenty of clearance, and looks good, now i just gotta put in the springs i sprayed sarvo also, a few things i noticed when doing the tb tweak that may or may not help someone else:

- dont forget to cut the two upper bumpstops before tweaking :oops:

- i found it way easier to jack the car up, then jack the whole wishbone up seperately and then cut the bumpstops with the wheel off

- couldnt cut the bumpstops real good, was sturggling, got the grinder out, seemed dodgy and couldnt get in there properly and ended that the good ol trusty bread knife was easiest! :lol: go the bread knife

and yeh that was about it, so heres a few piccies for you guys, hope u like, the pics also show the arb winch bar i bought from redrocket, the lwb coils i purchased for 50 bucks and have sprayed blue, not because dobinsons are blue my girlfriend wanted them pink, like magenta, but i couldnt find rust kill paint in the magenta, so blue it was. just for note, the can under the bash plate is 8" high, but i now have a good 12" clearance between the bash plate and ground, and that wasnt even 2", so feels good, enjoy! :D

yeh guys what is this "indexing" u all speak of, should i do it? seems good at the moment everythings sweet, what does the indexing involve? cos none of the tb tweak pages on here extrapolate into the depths of indexing? :? if anyone could help... ;)

man we gotta get together and check out each other rigs hey, i think noisey, ur livin in sydney now right? :? we should get a crew together of mitsu's and share some stories and info and stuff, go for a cruise to the wattos or soemthing, but to answer ur question, the springs are simply the springs out of a LWB paj, so im going to put them in and see how we go and see how much lift i get, depending on the condition of mine, the condition of the ones iv bought, they seem good - very good, so hopefully will give me some lift and then ill get some blocks machined up at dads work and when my tyres run out some 33"s and ill be pretty happy for a fair while :D :D

Sounds like you wound the adjusters at the rear mounting point up.
Indexing-
If you disconnect the torsion from the a-arm you will then be able to side the mounting cup forward off the torsion bar.
You will see the front end of the torsion bar is splined (gear like grooves cut lenth ways).
If you rotate the cup a couple splines from it's original position and refit it the end result is you have raise the suspension.
Looking from the front of the car rotate the drivers side anti-cockwise and clockwise for passengers side. I think as i have not done it yet
Far better than winding the rear adjusters right out.

all makes logical sense to me, but can anyone else confirm the rotations of the cups? clockwise/antiwise looking at the car from the front? yes, i did just wind up the screw that goes through the chassis, i thought thats how u raise the front via the torsion bars? or is it better to actually index them and then little bit of tweaking? if i were to now index them, should i 'untweak' them bolt that goes through the chassis, undo the torsion bar from the a-arm, index them, reconnect, then tweak just a little at the chassis bolt? would this be better? thanks heap for your help though guys :D ;)

if you have the gregorys for the pajero it tells you how to do index them in there i might do mine tomorrow because tb's tend to sag after a while

ahhh ok sweet matt,

dont have gregorys i got the cd version of the book, should be something on there somewhere, sounds like illbe doing that instead then, if only i can get the stupid bash plates off, theres a screw in there rounded out and not budging much :bad-words: anyways sweet, thanks guys

ok i have just done what you did, just to level the car out a bit. i also took a big hammer to a bent bash plate. wow half a days work fits into 2 lines :oops:

One thing i've just learnt from playing with mine is that you *must not* forget to put the locking nut back on top of the torsion bar nuts. I took one off and drive around for a week whilst i got to the bolt place to get some like sized washers. And tonight i cannot take the tighening nut off, i think it's twisted on the bolt, not just because it's under load. I've got the torsion bar jacked up to take the load off the nut, but i still can only just move it with all my force. So after tomorrows body lift, it's out with the grider to cut it off, then down to the wreckers on Monday for new bolts, fuggin torsion bars.. Worst part is that i know it's my fault for not putting it back on.. :(

my ajusting nut and lock nut are stuck togeather so i can't get them apart with out takeing them off. i wonder if lock nuts work when they are stuck to the ajuster nut probly not.... mmmm

klrevo did you just hold the nut and turn the bolt or did you turn the nut? i read the pros just use a rattle gun on the bolt and hold the nut still. i must get my self a rattle gun and a compresser it sounds like fun :lol:

Not meaning to hijack, i've been putting a spanner on the nuts and using a socket on the bolt head. This works well, but if you do it too many times, like i have, the bolt head eats into the U shape washer. But i've discovered tonight that if you use your bottle jack to jack up the bolt, you can easily adjust the nut at the top. You do have jack it up a fair way to relieve the force on the nuts though. But be carefull doing this, as there is a lot of sping tension involved..

yeh matt,

i just backed off the locking nut, then a socket end spanner on the bottom nut, tightened the bolt with an extension socket, and presto, everything seemed to go well, until i couldnt figure out why i coulsnt wind it up anymore and thats when i remembered the bumpstops, but its all sweet now :lol: does anyone else notice that the ride is somewhat bouncier??? and is there any cons of winding up the tb's??? :? is indexing better??? :?
anyways yeh mine seemed to go sweet, prob trim the bumpstops a bit more, theres room but not much, 2-3mm, but tommorrow heading up to stockton with local 4wd club, should be fun,

p.s- good tip there misery, whats ur name dude? rig? yeh few ways around it, i rekon mine worked alright, jacked up in the middle under the x-member, then wind em up, let it down, measure, drive, measure, fiddle, takes a bit oft ime but it gets there, and easiest way to trim bumpstops was definitely to take the wheel off, jack it up under the ball joint, and then trim with a bread knife ;)

hey every body

i just got back from a little light off roading and alot of twisty road driving and it handels better then it did before (tyres were also pumped up to 40 psi) the off road bit was a little rough but i wasn't sparing it so that could be why and the tyres too.

over all very happy and it'll be going up again since it sagged a bit on the trip.

TB TWEAK has now turned into COIL TWEAK aswell, wanted to head round to my mechanics place to utilise his hoist to put the coils in, but he was so busy i couldnt, so it ended up that i took him home, and did it in the drive way, some points,

- the end of my drive way kinda of does this, \ /, it goes down, then up real quick, so i dropped the rear wheels in there and used my floor jack, and for anyone wondering, maybe anyone new or keen to try, do it, its dead easy, heres how mine went,

-jacked the arse off the ground,

-took the wheels off, with bottle jack under diff

-undid the shock mount bolts

-dropped the diff

-pulled old springs out, and put new ones in

-upped the jack under the diff so the shock mounts lined up

-did shock mount bolts up

-put wheels back on

-drove away, not quite sure how much higher cos i forgot to meausre the original distance, but definitely a lift from the LWB coils in the SWB, for you MIYAGI ;) , but umm, oh id give it somewhere around the 2" mark, my old springs werent shagged, and the ones from the LWB werent either, so should give some reference, if the batteries in the camera werent dead id take some photos, before and after, will do tomoz :D

thanks for the great resources on these forums cos it helped me alot, i didnt actually look at them to do it, but plenty of reading and research, all up the lift cost $63, $50 for springs and $13 for the blue paint :D

Regrading the last couple of comments.... I put GQ springs under mine, but before doing so I made lots of calls to make sure it was all legal, and was told yes. I got a little over 3 inch lift, and was told by the RTA that I'd have to go 5-6 inch to be illegal.

thats alright then meminiau, good to hear, this was just to see how we go, might go the pootrol coils soon then, same blue, i ended up with about 2" lift and tried him out on the wkend, went well :D p.s - is your name dean also? cos thatd be weird :shock: two deans, two swb jabbers, :armsup:

Hey!... is your name Dean too??

I own a LWB NG, and it's the first 4wd I have ever had. I am extremely happy with it! I prob would have got a bigger lift if I had a SWB, but I am more than happy with the lift I got.

You ever come up to newcastle? Maybe we could catch up one day!

sorry buddy i thought u had SWB, if u have stock wheels on ur NG LWB my uncle is keen to get rid of the wheels on his, sunnys with some sort of AT tyre, in about the 31" size, he wants to get rid of for touring in the stockers, let me know man, as far as newy, well i get around in the wattos and sugarloaf and stocko and what not, not exactly newy but close ;)

For you to get to Stocko u have to go straight past my place. I live in Belmont. I went to Mt Sugarloaf on the w/end and over at Freemans waterhole too.

I have just bought a set of cruiser rims so I too have a set of stock wheels gathering dust!
