budget and goals for the truck?
personally if money was no object i'd love to throw a 15b-t or something in my 40... which your halfway there having the 4 cylinder gearbox input shaft.
but rebuild it, throw on a small boost snail, and you've got another 20 years of slow motoring enjoyment to be had... so again, what are the aims for the truck, and what budget constraints

15bt is a bit spendy... i think it's 4 litre, and should fit in the hole your 3b's in
nothing wrong with a turbo 3b though, for general offroad duties. a rebuild, and a turbo from a small jap turbo car, like a 200sx or an old supra should be sweet

mate i had the same delema with my 3b motor i fitted a reco 3b even tho i
had guy's tellin me to fit the 14bt or the 15bft and i ignored them
now im kickin meself for not listening
the 3b is just a slow dog maybe the turbo might help but id rather go for the one of the other two motors now
if you want il sell you my 3b thats got 50 000 km on it to fund my 15bft motor

I have a B short engine for sale. Bought second hand a few years ago from the rustiest 40 I've ever seen. Used for putting boats in and out of water down south coast. Engine looks rusty but very little wear on crank and bores.

I had a b in my shorty when i got it. I rebuilt it ,but the damn thing was just a slug. took me longer to get any where & cost me more in fuel than the v8 I put in it. maybe that might be an option.

a 3B would be a good replacement.
youd be wasting your money rebuilding the B.
if you can get a 13BT (factory turbo) go for that. a 3B / 13BT should be a bolt in replacement, where as a 14BT or 15BT isnt AFAIK.
sure the 3B is no powerhouse, but its a 30 year old diesel 4wd, you didnt buy it as a race car!.
