there is a sirclip (circled) on top of the bearing retainer which I took off. Don't worry about the drum in the picture, it is off.
I cant for the life of me get that retainer to budge. Do I have to heat it up or does it need to a hydrolic press to push it out?

the method described in service manuals involves using a dremel or angle grinder to cut a slot in the retainer, then hit it with a chisel to split the ring. the method is quite effective.
you need a very tall press to get the long axle in/out.

Pressed mine out the other day . I followed the directions in the manual. First I took off the snap ring . Then I made a SST from an old axle housing and pushed the axle out with my hydraulic press. Easy as.

cold chissel it, should split it and break off.. .. should get a new one in the bearing kit.. once you get the retainer off you still wont budge the bearing without a press anyways..

if u r near gympie i would fit a new bearing to your axle shaft for $30-00 a side.
i have all the SST (jigs) to remove and replace the bearings .
(that price is when u remove the axle from the housing)

hit it with a cold chisel in 3 places( aiming towards the centre of the axle) turn the axle upside down and bang it on a block of wood

Unfortunatley I am in Townsville, a little too far for a quick trip to Gympie
Skootin, even if I do what you say and get the retainer off the bearing would still be locked in place anyway, like Slayer said, right?

once u get the retainer off u can try sitting the brake shoes on a few peices of board, get another peice of board and sit it oon the end of the axle. smack the board with a hammer and see, that should get it off, but if u havnt got a press u wont get a new one on without damaging it (wakcing the crap outa it), thats what i ment to say before..

a webpage i read a while ago suggested putting a rag on a lump of timber, and drop the axle down hard onto the rag/timber repeatedly
the weight of the hub will dislodge itself and drop.
the rag is there to stop you damaging the hub etc when it drops.

these bearings and retainers are on very tight most of the time, the only way to do it is in a press.

Tried it and to no avail.
I think the only thing I succeeded in doing was wrecking the bearing even more. hehe
