naa the pre 2002 models had the gearbox troubles... and i heard the real early ones had gudgeon problems...

should be all good though... even if you do but a 01 or 02 gu with a dodgy gearbox... nissan have been fixing them out of warranty... they only did mine last week (late 01 model)

If I was to buy another 2nd hand 3.0 lt ( already own one ) it'd be only 2002 or newer. Nissan I doubt would fix any problem (even out of warrantee) unless it occurred first. Where'd you be if the engine blows in tthe desert or the box drops a gear. Early versions have been known to be susceptable to these probs and unless proof can be supplied of being fixed don't touch em.

my gearbox's 5th gear got replaced no questions (01 model).. there seemed like nothing wrong with it at all... just showed up with slight discolouration of the oil at the 80 thou service

i have however heard of other situations with older ones not being fixed by nissan

goto the patrol forum, exploroz forum, overlander, 4wd mthly, and notgoodenough sites, search for issues,

There was a bloke recently whose 99 model 3.0 with 70k klms died on him, nothing from nissan at all anymore on them. The bloke said nissan stopped being generous in June this yr replacing things.

infact search here for ROLYs 3.0, shes a gem. Prime example.

2 gear boxes
2 engines
3 cracked and 1 holed piston
4 transfer case prop seals
3 or 4 ac compressors
leaky sump (they all do)
clutch was almost done at 55,000kms
cracked flywheel (oil filled)
3 or 4 AF sensors
leaky intercooler (they all do)

I wouldnt have one if it was GIVEN to me.

Funny about 99 model 3.0 l died,when in fact wasn't even born.
Get your facts right.
3.0 GU came to OZ in mid 2000.

For the record I just came back from 14000km trip, crossing Simpson and Tanami deserts and than traveling to Broom-Perth-Sydney across Nullubor
without any problems.
It's got 95000km now

Mines done 105000k and never missed a beat. (except when i put it in a great big water hole and screwed the AFM) but that was my fault, not the patrol's.

Also, remember all cars will have genetic problems of some sort. The thing with the 3L GU is that they sold so many more of the 3L than any other version (around 70% of Patrol GU sales were 3L version). The problems tend to get highlighted as a "major" issue when in fact it is a few that have had problems - all usually that version.

For every 1 that has had a problem, you'll find 1,000 that didn't.

The reason why you didn't hear about problems with other versions - they probably didn't sell 1,000 4.8 petrols in total! (said with a bit of "tongue in cheek", but you get the idea)

Just traded a 2001 GU 3.0 with 238,000 kms on it. It never missed a beat and has done a whole lot of towing and hard off road work. It was so good that I replaced it with the same again. My fifth Patrol.

Why is it "OBVIOUSLY" not true? the bloke posted photos of his hunk of shit to top it off.

Today - Another one up in smoke. Obviously not true though...

Been told on quiet by the local Nissan service manager big difference in Post June 2002 models. I was considering a 4.2 again but with the cost of fuel I can rebuild the 3L every 100,000Km and still be in front.
