ok been doing my research on the 3.0 for a while now (almost bought one last year but got an 80 series).
need some advice on buying a GU.
it appears gu3 has been very reliable.
if im buying used, will nissan still cover it? (i presume not).
if buying used from a dealer, is a warranty of any use for this problem?
lastly, nissan told me a year ago, the problem was caused by not having enough oil, or something like that, and they have changed the dipstick on newer ones. was this the real cause?
I know there has been a lot of talk on this already, but have read most of it and my questions are specific.
Thanks.
gu 30lt

I've done 95000km in GU III without major problem.
I would chose 3.0 lt over 4.2 again if I was buying, but would also consider 4.8 petrol as diesel prices are becoming very unrealistic

You may like the price of petrol but I'd bet you'll be whinging about the consumption especially around town. Cant get the 4.2 with an auto, my 3.0 lt with auto eats hills for breakfast, sure it goes down the other side pretty quick but it teachs you to drive thru the brakes if necessary.

I owned 4.5 GU prior and 4.8 wouldn't use much more fuel.
Sure 3.0 lt is more economical(even with high diesel prices) but 4.8 has lot more power too

Also,You can convert 4.8 to run on gas and it would be cheaper to run than diesel, and still more powerfull.

Just traded a 2001 Gu 3.0 with 238,000 kms on it on a new one. Never had a problem with it. Wouldn't buy a 4.2 as the peformance is the same as the 3.0 and the 3.0 is $7k cheaper. Might be worth buying the 4.2 if you keep them for in excess of 300,000kms but as I trade them at 250,000 kms or 4 years, it's not worth it. 4.8 would be worth a look these days though especially second hand as their resale is ordinary.
