Outer Limits 4x4 Board

The Park Brake on my 80 series cruiser seems to be VERY ineffective.
It will not hold when on a slope and I can drive comfortably with it on!!!
It does however seem to hold when I put it in neutral on flat ground and try and push it.
The manual says adjustment should be 7-9 clicks, it is currently on 7 clicks.

Any ideas what the hell is going on?!?!?

get underneith your rig and tighten it. its probably just stretched over time. i have to tighten mine up every 6 months

The correct way to adjust a drum handbrake is to back off the handbrake cable and adjust up the rear brakes ,then adjust up the handbrake cable.
If only the cable is adjusted you work the leading shoe more then the trailing which is why you often find one shoe heavily worn and the other still good. The 80 handbrake adjustment requires the wheel removed from memory.

its a 80 brake they are fu%ken usless, if u search on here there sound me the mthod to adjust it up , but u need to do it every few months atleast

I disagree. correctly adjusted, they are quite effective - maybe not as effective as a full sized drum handbrake bbut good enough to hold the truck on a fairly steep slope. Who does handbrake turns in a landcruiser anyway?

not true. correctly adjusted, they don't need re-adjustment for around 50,000km - it only holds the truck when it's stopped, so it doesn't wear.

as has already been suggested, you need to back off the cable, adjust it at the drum, then set the cable tension. The thing that kills 80 handbrakes, like any handbrake, is mud. adjust it correctly, stay out of mud, and it will work well for a long time. If you want to drive in mud, learn to live without it.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to check it out over the weekend. I did buy the gregory's manual so I know what I am looking at now.
Might get a chance on Wednesday. (Ekka holiday!)

I am just in the middle of getting my handbrake working the way it should. Everything seems ok, but the levers at the wheels move a long way before the brake shoes start to move, and in turn making the lever in the car move almost to full extension before the handbrake works. Is it a simple matter of adjusting the shoes out more or what? How much should I be taking the shoes out to?
