hi all what is a daihatsu rocky 1985 off road are they any good

i have a daihatsu rocky 1984 and it ROCKS offroad
Has been everywhere my friend with a GQ, 6" lift and 35" tyres has, it just takes me longer, and sometimes a bit of rock-packing
U looking at buying one or you just bought one?
Is it diesel or petrol?

I'd recomend diesel if u can get it, just for the better engine braking etc. But friend of mine up road has a petrol, not sure of year, 84 or 85, and it sounds like its about to die
, heard him taking off the other day and sounded terrible, like was only firing on 3 pistons or sumtihng
. But that could say more about that individual car than petrol versions in general. I'd say, being such an old car, if its petrol and on its original engine, you might ave a bit of trouble... diesel's tend to last longer.
but if that doesn't bother ya, they very capable little cars offroad. Expect to pay more for parts than most other cars, and also have a bit of trouble finding some parts. You can't really get lockers for em anymore
, and if its that old suspendion will have probly sagged too so could do with a set of new leafs and lift. Looked under mine today and they have started to bend downwards
(getting new ones +2" late this year
). My personal experience, went wheeling with the GQ i talked about earlier, and sum1 who had a 4runner/surf, and 60 series yota, all truly amazed at what the lil thing can do stock. There is a thread a bit down about em being a bit tippy, mainly cuz they so narrow, but on the upside they can often squeeze around obstackles that other cars have to go over. I definetly recomend it as a 1st 4x4, very cool with the sunroof and removable fibreglass top

well in that case, without bagging zukes
, rocky will be better offroad. Friend with GQ has been wheeling with the 60 series owner (who used to have a sierra b4 the 60), and rekons my rocky goes heaps better than the zuke offroad.

hey chris motor has plenty of legs left
wheelbase is a bit longer and a tad wider bud....
lwb resin type model and definitely more flex than zuks i have been out with. keep in mind this has new aftermarket springs(not stock)

If thats the case then why do you want a vehicle that has bugger all aftermarket and manufacturer support???

Chris the turbo diesels have a realy poky motor, my 85 turbo diesel will spin both back wheels of from a light if you wind her up to 2500 rpm. So off road they have plenty of poke. Have fun with your new toy

the one im getting has a 2in b/l and 2in leafs and 31's so i wont have to do much dose any one know where i can get wheel space's for it to make it wider

most of the F series Ford trucks have wheells with same stud pattern and wider offset, failing that, most 4x4 places should sell spacers, not sure if u can get em for rocky's i have never asked.
But with 4" lift and 31's u'll be sweet

Another alternative what we do in Malaysia.
We grab hold of the old steel rims, and flip the stud face to the opposite side to get more offset.
It's a welding job.
If u can get hold of 8 rims u can offset the steel rims and run wider. Hehe

What needs to be welded? I thought you could just flip the rim, and all would be sweet

i think suzi rims match rocky rims, so if checkin for wheel spacers perhaps see if it'l match.
also rockys ROCK!!! especially stock....it dont matter that it has a crappy aftermarket range...they can follow any car any where....provided you have the right attitude

yep ur suzi wheels are the same stud pattern so you can definitely get wheel spacers for them

do you really need the bevel? And this form of 'offset' would'nt be road legal i assume? - In which case, even if u NEEDED the bevel for high speeds, since you'd only be using it off-road it wouldn't really matter

If you put your wheels on backwards (flipped around) wont they contact on the brake calipers and that?
Flipping rims just means moving the centre to gain more offset.. the look of the rim doesn't change.. like the centre is not then back to front.. if thats what your thinking Nath..
And with legality... its only about an increase of 25mm and your illegal in NSW unfortunately... so a rim with an offset 13mm larger puts you at 26mm wider overall... so its illegal anyways... The speedy desert rat rims that a lot of people use are +28mm... so thats way out of legal range
But looks phat!

It's just a sunraysia style wheel... very very common over here.
They come in very wide offsets.. I think +28mm is the largest you can get for our fitment off the shelf..

Righto then. First, if you dont have the bevel on the nut and rim surface, it will not locate properly and either come loose, or snap your studs- either way loosing a wheel in the process. The short of it is DONT DO IT. The term flipping rims describes cutting the centre section away from the rim bit, moveing it in or out/spinning the rim section, then re-welding it so the offset is changed. This is not a easy at home job. Also, not if you flip the rim, then its not always possible to add mechanical beadlocks to the outer bead too due to the differing cross section of the rim (as when flipped , the old inside bead is now the outside bead. I have a set of speed desert rat -28mm 15X8 rims on my zook, and with 11.5in wide swampers they hang out the guards a few inches (outside flare). Remember when you change the rim offset, you also change the load on the bearings (wheel + kingpin etc). This promotes quicker and un-even wear. The rim offset and tyre diamiter and width also determine your scrub radius, so changing any of these will affect your front end geometry, possibly causeing tyre wear and heavy steering.

Width yes. I not saying dont run flipped rims, or spacers or big offset rims, just dont go turning your rims backwards!!!! I run big offset rims on my zook now. Just take note of what your doing and know the effects of it before you go and do it.
