Jaycar EGT gauge results

Installed a Jaycar EGT kit on Saturday. Did a drive up to the Blue Mountains today, and here are a few readings in different gears, boost pressure and speed. Its a 1995 HZJ80 cruiser, with DTS kit, unintercooled, boost compensater, 3" mandrell exhaust and weighs ~2850kg as is:-

4th gear
-80km/h, 4psi = 257deg.C
-90km/h, 5psi = 260deg.C
-100km/h, 7psi = 280deg.C

5th gear
-80km/h, 2.5psi = 252deg.C
-90km/h, 4psi = 300deg.C
-100km/h, 6.5psi = 320deg.C
-110km/h, 8.5psi = 325deg.C
-120km/h, 10psi = 335deg.C

Now, up the 1st long climb at the end of the M4:-

4th gear
-90km/h, 13psi = 460deg.C
It did touch 500deg.C a few times, but that was giving it a fairly royal arse kicking on some overtaking.

When the kit and everything was installed @ West End, the max. temp. reached 561deg.C, 4th gear, 145km/h. Im yet to look at the EGT graph they gave me after the tune, to compare the readings, but as it is, i am fairly happy with how it has turned out.

Does anyone else have figures like this to compare?? From and TD truck??

my ute gets to around the same temp 550c when given a pizzling
running 15psi fairly hooks along too ...

did u fix ur a/c idler pully :finger:

I am about to get a thermocouple made up for my Jaycar egt to suit my exhaust, but will let you know.

dose anyone have a part no for these jiggers and wat did you pay for it

COst about $70 plus another 70ish for a thermocouple made to suit.

Why do you need a specially made thermocouple? It looks like just a standard K-type, and isn't there one in the kit already? If so then all you need to do is fit a swagelok fitting to the exhaust system and bolt it in.

The swagelok part you need is on P10

i doubt the TC supplied with the kit would handle exhaust temps or be constructed well enough to handle the exhaust flow, it would erode real quick.

two stroke ultralight engines use egt guages and suppliers for these motors would be a good place to get a thermocouple, or try the yellow pages for industrial oven / heat control suppliers. These mobs should be able to make one up on the spot.

All solid (non wire type) K-Type thermocouples should be able to handle standard exhaust temps. Most are able to measure up to 1000°C.

I have used thermocouples in much harsher environments than exhaust gas - never had any "erosion" problems.

EDIT - this looks like the thermocouple that comes with kit. Can handle up to 1200°C.

Phill, can you take some pics so we can see the setup.....specifically at the exh. manifold/turbo/dump pipe end?

I run one in my 4.5 cruiser, it uses a type K thermoocouple, and after breaking two of the $12 Jaycar ones, i got a descent one and put it upstream of the turbo....at idle it runs 250, slow driving around 400, and gets up to high 500's pretty quick..but thats to be expected with where it is and a petrol donk.

While the standard kit thermo can measure very high temps (I stuck mine into the flame on my stove until it read 600C+) the housing and cable are plastic so will melt a few minutes later as the heat soaked up the probe. Best to buy the right thing first go as the first guy did.
