How can I tell what year a Small Block Chev V8 is?

From the casting numbers on the block itself, have a book somewhere that list them, heads as well might take a while to find it cos I have no idea where it is....

Get the number from the back of the block just above the bell housing on the left hand side then look here:

No worries. There are a few sites that list the casting numbers but I find this one the best. Plenty of other good info there too.

Unfortunately I can only narrow mine down to 68 to 73. But I do know that it was finished on the 12th of December by McKinnon Industries in Canada!

2car do you know any sites that may have this sort of info on V6 chevs?

I know they are out there, but I have recently lost all of my bookmarks/favourites.

Ruff, the Chev V6's (229's) have the date cast on them. Have a look at the TOP rear of the block near where the bell housing would bolt up (oil filter side) half way between the upper bell housing bolt holes and the dowel.
