Thanks for help with PZJ70 Clutch problem

Hey guys, just thought i'd put out a big thanks to all that offered advice when i had clutch problems with my PZJ70 (post dated 29 June), especially dumbdunce and beanz2.

I eventually tracked down the necessary components and fixed the clutch, which has been running smoothly for over a month now.

Heres a run down on what the problem was and what I did to fix it.

The clutch went in my PZJ70 and when I dropped the gearbox discovered a destroyed dual-mass flywheel, I thought about purchasing an exedy solid flywheel conversion kit for the PZJ, but at over $900 it was a bit exy, besides I would prefer to use stock cruiser parts, just in case something breaks out the back of burke..

After a bit of research and alot of measurement (thanks Brian) I found that the 1HZ flywheel/Pressure plate would bolt up to my 1PZ (5 cyl) engine with the same crank pattern.

I then used a clutch plate out of a 78 series as they have the 1HZ/R151F engine /gearbox combo and therefore fit right up to my 1HZ flywheel and R151F gearbox. The other advantage here is that the 75/78 series clutch/pressure plate components are 275mm diam rather than the 260mm diam of my original PZJ stuff.

This was all well and good, except the 1HZ flywheel/pressure plate combo was 5mm thinner than my 1PZ dual-mass flywheel/pressure plate combo.

To make up the extra 5mm I thought about modifying slave cylinder throw out and all sorts of ideas, when I found out from a local bearing supplier that I could get a hold of a thrust bearing of the same spline diam and fork width but 5mm longer..
After a bit more investigation it turned out that it was out of a Toyota Coaster Bus.. which also has the 1HZ engine.. so it would fit perfectly to my 1HZ pressure plate..

Incidently, there has been no noticable difference in vibration harshness due to the solid flywheel and I've been really happy with how well everything shifts now. Oh and the total cost came in at $400 with all new parts except a reco'd flywheel and pressure plate!

Thanks again for those that had input to this project.. hope this may come in handy if anyone else with a PZJ needs to do clutch work.. or at least I hope you've had an interesting read!

Excellent info. Care to post the part number of the thrust bearing? By thrust bearing do you mean clutch release / throw out bearing? I'm sorry, I'm a forriner from the other side of the ocean :)

good to hear you got it all sorted out.

yes thrust bearing = throwout bearing = release bearing. Crazy furriners :twisted:
