1HDT Leaking Oil

Hey all,

having a bitta trouble with our 1HDT leaking oil. replaced rear main seal on the motor around 14 months ago, brought it home then a couple days later started leakin from front main seal on the motor, got that replaced, again couple days later it started leaking, this time the oil pump seal on the idler wheel was leaking, had it fixed during the week got the car back yesterday, woke up this morn and its leaking AGAIN!!!! took it to the mechanic this morn and he drove it on the hoist to hava look and now its pissing out the rear main seal (which was replaced last year). he recons there may be a breathing problem, but we just finished pulling the tappet cover off and the PCV valve is not bloked, so back to the drawing board!

If any one has any idea on why it wants to continue forcing oil out of the weakest seal, as its absolutely pissing out! would be much appreciated. Has any one experienced this same sorta bull$h!t with there 1HDT????????

Cheers Troy

May seem like a stupid question, but someone hasn't accidently hooked the crankcase breather up to the pressurised side of the turbo, thus having the turbo boosting up the crankcase also??

This happens more when people hook up aftermarket turbo setups, rather than factory ones.

how many km does the engine have? if there is a lot of blowby the breather cannot cope with it.

I would start by running the engine with a pressure gauge attached (tee'd into) the crankcase breather and/or the turbo oil return line to see if there is significant crankcase pressure being developed. it's possible (however unlikely) that boost pressure or exhaust pressure is forcing its way past the turbo oil seals and pressurising the turbo centre housing and thereby pressurising the crankcase.

The Cruiser has done 332 000kms altho the motor was rebuilt at 208 000 cause the sucker dropped the big ends, chewed the crank, and buggered the bore, there-for a full engine rebuild!!! 'Oh What A Fealing!'. The Turbo has never been touched.

What type of oil r u using?? (Syntetics are good at finding their way past the seals) it sounds like you have blowby past the rings...pressurising the sump....unless that last major incident has done stuff to the bottom end and the crank can now float a bit in the bearings.....whoever did the front seal....i hope they tightened the bolt back up to 380ft/lbs again...common for the balancer to fall back off after work that hasnt been done properly....
Back to the problem....is the turbo running a red light??? maybe it is overboosting??? Ive seen diesels that are worn out traded in running low boost to stop the leaks and smoke.

Mate, the mechanic uses Penzoil 15W50 oil, dunno if its synthetic or not. I woulda thought the motor is to young to have that much blow by past the rings. I am a little conerned on how much smoke it blows when using engine braking down hills. There is one hill near where we live thats fairly long and ill come back to third to use a bitta engine braking (as we have to turn at the bottom) and when the motor is slowing down from say 3000rpm i look in the rear-vision mirror and at night u can see its blowing massive puffs of smoke in the car behinds headlights. Is that normal? I woulda thought not. Mum thinks it does that because i am driving it to hard, but i ignore that :P . With my foot not on the throttle, the fuel pump isnt giving that much fuel to the motor (only enough for it to come back to idle). So technically its not blowing un-burnt fuel, which must mean its oil thats burning, causing the smoke? is that half correct? Or do most diesels blow smoke when engine braking?

Funny u should say that, after we picked it up from having the H/Balancer done we were heading up the coast to finally pick my car up and 20 mins up the road it threw the H/balancer off again, they didnt do sumthing properly :? so they replaced every thing that needed to be done free of charge. The H/balancer on ours doesnt have a bolt or keeper plate, If i remember what the Mechanic told me its just like a push on, if that makes any sense?

The Turbo has the Red light but never in the whole time we've had the car has it come on while the motor has been running.

Hope i havnt confused yas too much.

if it is oil burning the smoke should be blue not black which is unburnt fuel

I cant really pin-point the exact colour, i know when you hammer it looks blacky-blue (ll if thats even a colour), but how could it be unburnt fuel when its engine braking???

blacky-blue is probably a mix of oil and unburnt fuel when hammering. When engine braking, if you have poor compression then you can have oil and partially burnt fuel smoke. Unburnt fuel give white "smoke".

heh. i thought i had the same problem. It's actually an optical illusion created by the cars headlight. you can tell because the 'smoke' seems to come from both sides of the car (opposed to just the exhaust side)
