Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Tell me what you think of this idea for my Mav.

I want to make a swingaway spare carrier (well, a pair of them, one for each side and carry two spares.)

The conventional way is to use a pivot on the rear bar, the DIY option is a trailer stub axle. I can do that but I was thinking about doing it a different way:

- pull out the pins for the hinges on both rear doors
- replace the pins with longer ones, about 2" longer
- above the existing hinges, add a new piece of tube that becomes a hinge for the swingaway arm ie two "hinges" per side, exactly same as doors.
- set up the two swingaways so they latch in the middle.

Considering that these hinges support the spare already it seems to me that they should be able to handle the weight... Whatcha reckon?

I definately wouldnt be hanging any more weight off the door hinges. The benefit of putting a seperate carrier is in removing the weight from the door hinges (especially when using a bigger, heavier spare!)

Try to build something using the rear bumper mounts or crossmember bit.
