Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Towing the old mans trailer after picking up the new 80 and lost tail/parkers and (obviously) dash lights. Checked fuse, 20amp in the 15amp slot and fuse plastic was melted slightly.

There's no power to fuse box in this position, although if I run power to it everything is cool. Also, when turning parker switch the relay is working ok.

Before I start ripping this cruiser to bits along side the other 2 in bits in the shed has anyone had this problem? I'm guessing the wiring has burnt out between the relay and the fuse box, but would like opinions before I start pulling the wiring out.

Is it possible that the trailer was the problem and caused the short?

The burnt plastic may have been the result of having a 20A fuse in a 15A spot.

It is possible, likely probable, that the trailer was the problem.

But this doesn't solve where the problem is now. It has obviously caused some problem in the car as with a new fuse and no trailer the parkers still don't work.

Looks like I'll have to pull it apart and do it tonight. I only got the car so I haven't even bought a workshop manual. Anyone know where there are some wiring diagrams on the net?

A wiring diagram is not really going to help you much for this.

You need to inspect the wiring.

It was a bit difficult to understand your post but Im guessing now that the 20A fuse was to much for the cable it was supposed to be protecting and hence it hasnt proteted it and now there is a melted cable somewhere which you will need to find.

Just follow it all through but try and use some logical thinking as you go.

ie......... if both the tail and whatever it is else thats gone.........well that suggests that its most likely the supply for those two items that has the problem rather than the individual item itself.

So that reduces your search by quite a fair bit.

Wanted wiring diagram as it may help me trace the wiring as it dissapears into a maze of conjugate (sp?) covered wiring bundles so thought it may help me trace wiring and confirm assumption that these lights operate off parker switch to a relay then to fuse box. It sounds like relay is inside or a part of a box above the kick panel as opposed to a free mounted relay. That's why I wanted a diagram.

Yeah but the wiring diagram doesnt show where the cables or electrical devices are in the car..........only how they are wired.

ie it will show that the battery has a positive feed to the fusebox but it wont show where that fuse box is.

Have a look at any wiring diagram and you will see what i mean.

in the 80, the tail light circuit is a bit 'special' - the fuse is actually AFTER the relay in the circuit - and the relay is only little, so it is possible you have fried the tail light relay. there is NO POWER to either side of the tail light fuse when the tail lights are off.

Yeah, sorted it out and you're spot on. I knew there wasn't power to the fuse when light was off but thought the fuse might be directly after the switch, hence why i wanted to find a wiring diagram. Replaced relay and all good.
