I've been lurking for a while and it looks like there is a good bit of Nissan Patrol expertise here.

I have recently bought a 3.0 TD Patrol SWB. It's a 2000 model (September) with 45,000 Kms on the clock.

Are there any faults that this model/engine is prone to? My engine seems to make a hell of a clatter. Is this a problem or is it just that I'm not used to it yet?

Is anyone running 285's with this model - any issues?

BTW, I used to own a Landcruiser. Actually, I've had three in total over the last ten years. This is somewhat of a departure for me and I'm keen to catch up on the group knowledge.

Cheers, Fisher (UK)

I heard that some have melted a piston or two.

I could be wrong, has anyone heard anything similar?

You are SOOOOOOOOOO lucky. We don't get the SWB GU here. The motor hasn't been around long enough to have any major faults and the drive train is almost indestructable.

They stopped selling the SWB here a year ago. This is one of the last. Any ideas whether I'll be Ok with 275 tyres?

The only problem I have found is with the steering. Instead of the wheel pointing a quarter to three - it's more like twenty to three. Is this likely to be the tracking that's off? Should it be done by Nissan or would a tyre centre do a better job.

Thanks for the help so far everyone.

What !? Blow up :? What goes wrong? You can't just leave it at that.
Looks like I might be taking the extended warranty option when the manufacturers 3 year warranty expires...

I stand corrected, I hadn't heard of anyone have probs. All the guys I know with them have been very happy.

As for the alignment. A shop with a good 4 wheel wheel alignment is the way to go.

A customer of ours has just fitted 37" MTR's to his GU Wagon with only 4" spring lift and without a body lift and only minor mods.

So yes you should be fine to fit 285's without any problems.

You say early 2000. How early? What changes were subsequently made? How would you know if yours has them?

My only other comment would be that your truck is far from standard and is probably worked hard - which may have contributed to your engine failure. On the other hand, you know of 5 other blow ups....

You have got me worried. Mine is an October 2000 model (UK) which is why I'm so interested to know whether mine is likely to suffer the same fate as yours.

Thanks

Here's what I've found out from Nissan UK: Early 2000 3.0 TDdi engines were prone to problems due to insufficient lubrication / oil capacity. All 3.0 TDdi's sold in the UK up to October 2000 were subject to a recall (fault code P1110) and the engines were replaced. I have checked with Nissan and the main dealer that serviced my Patrol and my engine has been replaced.

Hope this helps. If anyone has an early 2000 TDdi then I suggest you contact Nissan and ask them where you stand.

We have a sept 2000 3.0ltr TD patrol. We had a factory recall about 2 months after we bought it (about the same time as our first service) to get the engine oil capacity increased. We have over 70,000kms on ours now & can't fault it. It has made countless trips to Landcruiser Park with 7 people, towing the race car & all the spares, with several days camping equipment for 7 people & still have power to burn. We have 295/75/16 BFGs. The only problem we have is when fully loaded, towing, taking off up a hill. Otherwise, no probs.

tick tick tick......

i got 80,000kms and the motor detonated the day before the warrenty expired.

my new motor cost $14,000 to supply and install... (no turbo or injectors)

you have your self a timebomb. their are 25 changes to the engine in the newer ones to stop them breaking pistons.

the oil increase was a bandaid fix, pre the bandaid they were only lasting 30,000kms

europe did the right thing and replaced every early engine proactively...

What list are you talking about? (with regards to the blown up motors)If the 3.0litre goes, might just have to think about one of those 5.0litre V8 thingies. But then 5 out of how many hundreds maybe they were unlucky. Just love my (Chad's) Nissan

This is the only reason I have opted for the extended warranty.

14g's I would stick a 6.5chev TD in it before I bought another 3.0TDI if it was outta warranty.
