Pre/Post Turbo Tunes/To Doo's

Mokay Folks,

Looking at slamming some air down the throat of my little yellow thing with the help of a snale. :?: (Turbo)

TD42 with 280k. Regularly serviced ie; Oil Filters 5-8k. Looking at running around 10psi maybe 12psi if the pump can deliver enough fuel.

The Injectors do need doing. Who offers the best quality for money ?? Is there such a thing as Turbo Spec Injectors or something along those lines ?? If so should I get these over regular ones ?? Would there be any point with the standard fuel pump.

Should I run some of the Chem Treatment crap through my block to de-gunkify it ? Does that stuff even work ??

As far as a tune up goes what should happen/get done ?? Should I get the vehicle tuned after the turbo or once before and once after ?

Looking at a 3" exhaust no muffler/hotdog. The dumper off the back of the turbo isn't 3 inches. I know there is a thread in general tech at the moment regarding this and the general consensus is that it doesn't matter. Will there be any benefit in keeping the exhaust the same as the dump pipe ??

Any help would be great folks.

Most definately get a 3" dump pipe as well. The factory pump will handle at least 1 bar (14psi boost) which is what I run but make sure you get an aneroid (boost compensator) fitted to the pump after the upgrade rather then just wind the fuel up which not only wastes diesel but the engine runs hotter also. As for exhaust definately get 3" (as I said with 3" dump pipe) but as to wether or not you run a muffler is really up to you. I chose to run a muffler as my wagon is just an everyday driver/tow rig and I didn't want to put up with the HUGE turbo whistle, etc (as good as it does sound) all the time although they do go slightly better without a muffler.

I started out running 3" dump pipe and system (with muffler) and 10psi boost (that is what it was in the dyno graph below) but have since changed to 14psi and have the intercooler sitting in the shed waiting for me to stop drinking rum and fit it.

The dyno sheet below shows before tunning and aneroid and after tunning and aneroid as I said both with 10psi.

$700 seen the aneroid fitted, tuned and dynoed at Motsons at Acacia Ridge.

The factory pump can be modified a great deal to produce some awsome figures for around $2000 but definately do not skimp on price and be sure you fit a 3" dump pipe

Haemeroid?? hahaha Aneroid... I have been told quite a few times what these things do. Yet never have seen one/nor would I know what one looks like...

So what should I be asking for tune + fit a boost compensator to my fuel pump. Not gonna do the plunger mods to the pump just yet... :x (Read as: "You're spending too much money as it is")

Pop the bonnet on a standard GQ and look at the top of the pump then pop the bonnet on a factory turbo GU and look at the top of the pump. I'm not going outside to take pics at this hour :D

last price I got for aneroid was $780+ fit from those cheap people at Rankins in Bayswater Jail.

No offence dude, but if ya gonna do it, do it once and do it right.. If you cant afford it now, wait and save up.

Get ya pump, injectors now, then wait for turbo, or you wont get the full value out of it.

All up will be around $1200 for pump and injectors + turbo ($3500) + exhaust ($700)if you get it all done for you - drop off car and pickup later.

Well the old boy and I are gonna start yanking shart off the side of my pootroleum tonight to install this mostly complete turbo glide kit I got from this board. Dad fabbed up a full turbo kit for his mazda diesel he had in his range rover so he is good at bastardising shit to fit :bad-words: -hopefully he can teach me the ways of the force -

Talking to my diesel mechanic mate has almost put me off doing it myself. And the turbo for that matter :x ie; very restrictive with boost. But for my application it is probably the best and it sort of prevents me from going that extra step ie; 24psi + 12mm plunger in fuel pump + Icooler (Never ending dollars). I just want to be able to pull a little better up hills (I am getting friction burns...Lube might help ???)

I am easily persuaded and can be talked out of things. My mate was mentioning maching the faces of the manifold and also where the turbo bolts to the manifold. And getting new manifold studs. This all in had me quite scared but god damn't it is just a snail and besides my car is yellow..

The only things missing are the oil send t-piece from the block and the air cleaner, which I am told is a modified precleaner..

I guess If I break shit I will ask more questions and post pictures... WISH ME LUCK !!!

The air cleaner side of things is a pre cleaner from a ZD30T or RD28T with the air flow metre hole covered up with a blanking plate or the ever so exspensive cleaner from a factory TD42T. As for the turbo cooling side of things a factory 4.2 turbo is cooled by both water and oil. It is so simple to so both oil feed and return and water feed and return. If need be I can post some pics of my oil feed return and water feed return.

New exhaust gaskets and studs is definately a good idea...I just replaced the plenum style turbo manifild on my TD42 with a turbo extractor manifold and all the gaskets were knackered and the studs on the end of the head were stretched from the old manifold warping so much.

If you can find an air cleaner from a TD42T that will make your life alot easier....think I payed $125 for mine.

A cheaper way of upgrading the fuel pump, is to get one from a RD28T....they use an 11mm plunger, so will give you a bit more puff. Take the whole pump and smash the aneroid from it on your pump too.
