Outer Limits 4x4 Board

My TD42 auto is sometimes slow to take off. You put your foot on the accelarator and it revs for a bit before engaging and moving anywhere. It gets better once warmed up but still sometimes there is the delay. It''s not bad....but it's definately there.

My mechanic reckons the auto box may need rebuilding........not keen on doing that at the moment...........don't have the $$$$$$.......

What do people think?

I'd get it serviced first, see how that goes.

Only had mine a year but I think it is a sluggish kind of box anyway. Some guys have said the same thing to me about a rebuild but I think it is because they are unfamiliar with the box.I mean it aint like my Accord auto cos it`s a truck box. I changed fluid 4 times and I think box is normal(170k). What ks have you?

Got 115ks on it, but its a jap import so that may not be genuine. Prob not too far off the mark tho I reckon.

I'll follow up on what u guys suggest.

What oil are you guys running? I have Penzoil in there cos that's what they serviced it with after I bought it, but I could try changing it out for Penrite or other?

Plenty of info on engine oil in archives. If you mean auto fluid then I use any Dexron 11 or better if you can afford it.

Yeah I just checked a few manufacturer sites and the only one that makes a recomendation for TD42 auto is Castrol and they recomend Dextron III.........I'll check what they put in there and might change it...........huge capacity tho.......not cheap I dare say.

hey, i had my gear box rebuilt about 12 months ago, just under $3000, not happy. now it's pretty responsive, when the workshop pulled it apart, he said it had never been serviced and i only had the car a couple of months, $160 for a service, small price to pay

Remember Mabsydney You`ll only get about 3 ltrs out when you drain although transmission holds over 10ltres if I remember. I just bought 25ltrs dex 11 for £25 sterling and drained ran and drained four times. Fluid is red now on dipstick. I think dex 11 is ok as that would have been the standard when Nissan designed that box but use 111 to be safe. That guy Rodneys web site is brill. If he was near me I would take it to him and maybe get one of his improved valve bodys and service if you are keeping the truck. If they weren`t an exchange item I would get son to bring one back from Oz to uk as they can be fitted yourself.

correct - you are better off to pay for a 'power flush', which will flush the lines and all from the box to the radiator oil cooler and back. its pretty much the only way to do it, but will cost you a few hunge since they use real oil which is $$$$ :( but worth it if you care for the box

Just had a look at Rodney's web site. I will give the dude a call in the next few days, problem is he's in Vic and I'm in NSW. But still I can chat to him about it.

I called Wholesale automatics a few days ago, didn't talk to the Chief, but the dude I talked to was very helpful. He said that is not a 'usual' problem for this box. He suggested I put in an extra litre of tranny fluid as it won't do any damage and may fix the problem, but he didnt seem to think it was a worry really.

The level is already pretty high on the dip stick, although it's very hard to get an accurate reading off that dip stick. Haven't added any yet, I think I'll just see how I go for now

you do check auto tranny fluid with the donk runnin too...
