planetry reduction hubs

I was having a squiz at a Mercedes trucks setup, tipper type 13t .
In comparison to the others they have tiny diffs, and planetry reduction hubs to deal with the gearing limitations of small crown wheels.
Good ground clearance without going to portals.
Does any know if they made them in a 1-3t range

Im not sure if they did but you may wanna try looking at the leyland trucks... again im not sure exatally of the model but I know they had planetary hubs and I know of a guy who started playing around with them with the intention of grafting them onto landy / rangie diffs....

There was a limited production model S2 landy that had them with dually 9.00x16's front & rear.

check out the thread "the ultimate landrover" , it talks about the famous "forestry rover" that was built in the uk by roadless traction (tractor makers) and had planetry hubs with a final drive (diff and hub) of about 13-1, it ran 28 inch rims with 52 inch tall tractor tyres.
there was another prototype that rover came up with, this time a tractor that had portal axles. but the cool part was that the portals could be rotated in the rim to change ride height so side slopes were more stable.

Now that is some cool shit.
Why did LR let this sort of ingenuity leave their design culture? I would love to be able to drive into LR and come out riding on adjustable portals with some mega low reduction gearing and big-arse tyres.

Would you have any more info on the s2 with the duallys
I think my 2a wants some.
Really its just out of intrest, I'm assuming this is a different vehicle to the one mentioned in the ultimate land rover thread

How do you like this from a Disco 1 I photographed here in Penrith last weekend.
I took more if anyone is interested.
They are MaxiDrive units.

Hi Ron
Were'nt they on the yellow Defender ute?
or was there a Disco with them on as well? All LR's use the same system so they'd fit any LR.
Yeah, Mal Storey at MaxiDrive at Carrara, Qld makes them and many other goodies for LR's.
ps my P38 RR is now gone as a trade-in - to the wreckers probably?

Hi Daniel,
No, these were on a white Disco that was being converted in KLR Automotive's workshop.
I agree that they'd probably fit all Def, Disco 1, RR classics etc.
So the blue P38A for sale on the RR and Disco forum was yours?
What did you buy?

I ended up with a 2005 HSE td6. I was looking at the Dv6 Sport but the suspension and cabin setups were not to my liking.
I now have some parts left over from the P38 including the new set of EAS bellows and new Boge shocks as well as a RHS fog lamp.
When I get some time, I'll advertise them for sale - maybe when I get around to swapping my MA body onto my FA chassis - that way there'll be a whole raft of parts to go.

Nice.
I may be interested in the Boge shocks. I was looking to buy a set.
To get back on topic, here is another pix I picked up somewhere on the 'Net. I think it is an official MD photo. I've cropped it and reduced its size.

Yep sure looks good - The yellow Defender at the LR expo at Penrith also had the same swivel drop axle setup at the rear as well giving it 4 wheel steer as well.
I paid $140 each for the P38 RR Boge shocks, put them on and dorve it for 2 weeks and then swapped them off for the trade-in.
Make me an offer by PM if you're interested?

PS - I also have a P38 alloy wheel/tyre that I used to use as a spare - easier to lift than the std steel spare. Good Michelin tyre. Wheel a bit knocked around.
At least the L322 RRs have 5 alloys as std!

Yeah same one, for some reason I thought it had duallys

I followed the Disco 1 with portal hubs today - boy, does it look mean. It has about a 2" suspension lift combined with the lift from the hubs. It is high.
Those in Penrith will see it about. The owner lives nearby.
The track of the Disco is much wider, too.
I wonder how many people behind the Disco will notice that the diff isn't in line with the centre line of the wheels.

Yep the drop hubs allowed the yellow Def at the expo to run 37" tyres from memory and the xtra track still allowed full steer lock.
So combine the 37" tyres with the drop axle hubs and the already good std LR diff clearance gives some mean diff clearance.
Maybe I'll look into this for my FA RR with the 6.5 td DMC motor?
