Hey all,

Ive got a swb diesel GQ shorty with a 5spd manaul. I was looking at doin an auto conversion. Basically because it will be my daily driver and i dont want to be changing gears all the time when im stuck in trafic.

Is it any easy conversion? What do i need? Cost? Any places in melb that would do it?

Thanks

Marz

I have same plan for a GU.. So far MQHOON(mick christie on her) has done it, and knows what is required.

If its going into a 4.2 then if the auto is out of another 4.2, its a straight swap over.

cost, $1000's. Gearbox autos are couple of grand alone, but you would go with a reconditioned one to save any hassles later. Plus the center console, pedals, engineers, etc.

Not sure on the brake booster/master cyl setup, and tailshaft - still lookin into this.

Places that would do it Sandy Bowman at Aus4wd in Bayswater.

yea my idea is park the GU next to the GQ, and swap everything that way, the only issue is the center console in the GU... may have to go with one out of a... 3.0, but a bit risky to reliability

ok got a quote. Its gonna cost around $3000-$3500

I was also thinking is a possible to do an engine conversion eg like a Holden V8 and just use the auto that comes with that?
Would that be cheaper?

I mean that way i can sell my:
TD42 Engine
5psd Gearbox
PTO winch
(how much are these items worth?)

you items are worth at a guess

$3000
$400
$500.

yes you can fit

a holden v8 (prob the dearest petrol as most complex kit)
a chev old school on gas
a chev old school crate motor which is unleaded
chev lt1 style carb or injected 305, 350 etc
gen 3
ford windsor / cleveland (uses delco not marks kit not 100% sure if an auto kit is available)

chev diesel, $$$$

or shell out for a newer nissan petrol auto but this is not a cheap option

if it was me i would not stuff around, sell yours buy a gq swb petty auto, end up with bulk cash difference to play with on the extra fuel usage, or turn the wick up a bit

if i were to do a new engine convertion i would find a doner 4b with the auto and motor of your choice and swap the copmlete unit over.
