which side rails/steps?

Who makes the best side rails/steps?

i want to get some for the 100 series beam front end. i want them to be able to hold the car and not bend and be able to jack off them if i have to.

DIY is best... unless u have vast amounts of $$$$$$$$ if u dont mind spending $$ then any 4x4 place with a workshop i think. Or a welder/fab place could do it, probly cheaper than a 4x4 shop too. I am making mine atm, not great to look at but solid as, and fairly easy

cool thanks...i might just have a go myself and see how they turn out.

is it hard to get the bends in the side rails the same on both sides to make them look alright?

if your in brisbane, go to Superior Engineering, or Snake Racing, or many many other places will do them for ya undoubtedly

these are the ones fitted to silver gqs shorty that we did....

we also have done the same style ones for beastmavster however his are unfinished as yet as we had issues when it came to mounting them.....no bodylift and bolt on brackets are a pita....these will be finished next weekend.. ( sorry andrew i have been slack) :oops: .. tube is 32nb 4mm wall and for extra strength sleeve the outer tube with 25 nb tube...

Is it better to go with tube or box section stuff or even RHS?

What thickness is going to be the best/strongest.

And what does the nb mean in 32nb?

should i be looking for stuff with a higher or lower nb?

The nb refers to nominal bore.. the inner size of the tube basically. then add your wall thickness on to that and it will give you the outside diameter of the tube.. 32nb 4mm wall is roughly 40mm. 32nb 3.2mm wall is roughly38.4mm. all good in theory but in reality the sizes are not quite that but will give you a rough guide.. if you are getting a bender to get you started you can just get a cheapo bow and arrow style but dont use the formers that come with it.. spend $85 and get a Dawn brand former.. this is where your nb sizes come into it. if you are using 32nb tube then get a 32nb former..the standard formers that come with the bender tend to crush the tube as they are cheap and nasty.

for your steps you would need at a minimum 4mm wall thickness but if you really want to strengthen it use 3.2mm wall and sleeve the outer step ( the one that will take the hardest hits ) with 25nb tube. basically put 25nb tube inside 32nb tube

you can use rhs as well but i just dont like the look of it so prefer the tube.. others prefer the rhs... it is entirely up to yourself..

I don't really like the look of RHS sliders but they are a hell of a lot stronger.

If you want to use the sliders to slide along rocks then i would NOT be using tube, its just to weak for that part of the car. But if you are not going to trash your car then tube should be fine.

So you have 2 choices
RHS- Strong, but only looks ok.
Tube- Weak, but looks good.

So its up to you

For mine I used RHS on the inside two rails and then tube on the outer rail once I put on the scrub bars. Hell strong - I use an overhead crane to pick up one side of the car to change wheels :D

I think i will go for the 2 tube type looking steps and put a smaller tube inside the outer rail.

I will try and post pics and all that when i get started in the next week or 2 :lol:

So is the most common mounting type (for patrols) sandwich/drill-and-bolt, or weld?
