Help

A mate of mine has a 1985 lux with a V6 commodore motor in it (it was a 2.4 Diesel origionally). He is running 33s and twin lockers (if that maters). He has blown 3 gearboxes, in about a year and a half. They have just been the standard 5 speed manuals, and one was a dodgy second hand one that lasted a week.

Anyway he has asked me to see what you guys think.

He is tossing up the idea of the dyna box from marks (bout $3000) or a full shift kited commo auto(bout $4500). Also thinking about replacing with another standard box (bout $500).

Another question he had was: are the current v6 gearboxes any stronger than the older boxes and are they compatable.

So what would be the most durable box and would it be worth it?

Anyway your thoughts, feedback and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Justin

You can get an R150 5 speed out of a V6 4Runner and it should be fine with the commo V6. You'll need to get the chain driven t-case that goes with it, or get an adapter to mate up to your existing t-case. The bellhousing is different too.

The R150 is basically the same strength as Marks heavy duty gearbox, but 1st is around 3.9 instead of 5.15 on the marks box.

At the end of the day, he needs to decide if he wants an auto or manual.
