Maverick/GQ Patrol factory diff lock question

Hi All,

I am looking at some SWB maverick and patrols. The last two mavericks I have seen have a factory diff lock. I am just after some information on how this works? Is it electronically activated? I turned it on in the last maverick i was in, and no lights on the dash appeared? The car manual doesn't give much info about it. Do you need to actually drive the car forward or something? Or??

How effective is it? I assume once it is activated it is as good as any manual locker? I have read a few posts on this forum that it can take a while to kick in?

Thanks,

...

With the original solenoid they will take forever to engage and disengage. Because when switching from on/off the solenoid doesn't seem to exhaust vacuum (Or let air in??) efficiently enough so you get a situation where the on side is fighting the off side for vacuum and until one has more than the other it doesn't switch... Do you follow me ???

Basically to make it work like an airlocker (Fast operation) you need to get one of those funky solenoids that were mentioned in the threads you probably read. And also do a search for my bashplate thread. I had a bashplate fabbed up by binskins 4wd to stop the thing from breaking when I hit rocks and such (good idea)...

A selectable locker in the rear you can't go wrong in my book...

it is vacuum opperated, the replacment solanoind is a dual air solanoid with the vac plumbed to the exaust port of the solanoid.

Both Mr Bubbles and I have written lenghtly post regardiong this topis that give a step by stp run down on how to do it, and if you want feel free to call me on 02 9894 8400 or email me.

by replacing the factoy solanoid system with a mag double air solanoid you can get the locker working as fast as an air locker, and I wired mine up using an ARB locker switch and a on/on relay so when the ignition is on with ehe swith off the locker is alsway off until you tun it on or you can go a three way swith to engage / didengage the locker.

Good Luck

Do you know if any of the patrols had factory diff locks? I have only seen them in the mavericks?

Thanks,

AS far as I know it would have started at the same time as the Maverick (eg 1988) but it was an option.

Given the price of 4wds (then and now) stretching for the extra of a difflock was beyond a lot of people.
