Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I really cant decide. I am looking for a 'nice' swb. There are many around that are cheaper and modified. But i dont really want to buy someone else's problem. I am willing to spend a bit extra to get a good one. I am not after a 4wd with big lift, etc. Just something nice, cheapish to buy, cheapish to run, and reasonably capable.

1988 Patrol LPG/Petrol - bog stock, 150,000kms, lady owner. $11,000. I like the fact it is in original condition, and on gas. I am led to believe it should return approx 20l/100 kms on gas. This excites me!

1989 Patrol Diesel, 220,000kms, $11,000. Has done some 4wding, and 4wding on sand. Basically stock condition - needs a little bit of work. Nothing major. Diesel is good! Not sure what economy this will return.

1989 Maverick XLT , snorkel, bullbar, spotlights. Used as a work car to tow trailer. This is the cheapest. It has a factory diff lock. $8,500. Not too happy that it is not on gas.

Please help!

for me the diesel.

But what do you want to do with it.. ?? That would help. How long do you want to keep it?

I want to keep it for a while! A long time. I think I am up to about 15 cars so far. I am sick of changing .

I want a car I can slowly build up. Something capable of tackling moderate/hard tracks (nothing hardcore), trips in the High Country, day trips around Melb, etc.

They will all do that........ just depends how big your paypacket is to run it

Why so grasshopper? What is it so expensive? Fuel, maintenance, mods??

If only I could have this bit from that car, and that bit from this car.. . Issues with buying a 2nd hand car. Everything is a comprimise.

I hear you. When you work out how much it costs you per 100 kms, it starts to make sense.. In your care

120/450* 100 * .50 = $13 per 100 kms.
(assume gas is 50 cent per litre)

Not bad these days!!

mines got near 400k, look after them and diesels run 4ever,.... the one thats never been used will probably be the most hassle simply cos it aint been used.

TB42 heads dislike LPG.. search for threads on it. $1000+ repairs - but once done, its DONE for good

Fuel - petrols 20l/100klms - tank only holds 95ltr...
they arent a light car, they are a 2ton thing
put MT's on it you will see the difference in fuel, put wide tires on you will also see it

i would not buy any of those. there all too dear and sounds crap. ive bought 5 swb patrols now and know that those one are over prices. for a stock patrol with low kms for a 1988-1990 dont pay anything over $8k. i just sold mine that was 88' in pretty good nick except for a oil leak that i was quoted $250 to get fixed for $6000. dont just go out an buy the first one. look around and you will find one in real good nick for $7000 guarenteed. 2 years ago i bought my current patrol for $8800. was diesel 92' swb with under 200 000 kms and was in alright condition. so just look around

Yeah its hard. I have been looking. And looking. I have seen a few nice examples for around $8000. But there is always something i really dont like about them, i.e. no dual fuel, etc.

I checked out the 1988 bog stock, 140,000 (not 150,000) kms this morning. It is in VERY good condition. It is a very nice vehicle for its age. Drives very well. BUt i agree, 10,500 - 11,000 is too much for it.

I really want something with less then 200,000 kms.

I would be looking at the Maverick XLT

It has the Snorkle already one, one less mod, and it has the rear locker if you want to use it, one less mod to to,

You can do a gas conversion to it and end up paying the same as one of the other Patrols, as the Gas conversion for a Patrol is around $1500-$2000 these days. so that would be my opinion

For this kind of vehicle where 400,000km + is normally the life of a petrol engine and 700,000km + for the diesel getting one with under 200,000km really isnt that important.

Hi all, i think its irrelevant how many klm the vehicle its done its how regular its maintenance has been up to scratch.. you can kill an engine olny a fraction of mileage. all depends on regular oilchanging, quality oils, etc etc


i would personally keep looking for the right truck. i had a swb i just sold for $5k, great little thing. be patient because as soon as you buy one, one will pop up even better, every time!!!
